BMW to Introduce New Production Six-Cylinder Diesel, Euro6 Emission System and Mild Hybrid Concept at Paris Show
18 September 2008
Among BMW’s introductions at the upcoming 2008 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris from 4–19 October will be a new straight-six 3.0-liter diesel applied in the new 7 Series and 3 Series; a new BluePerformance application that will bring diesel emissions to Euro 6 compliance; and a new gasoline-electric mild hybrid concept in the 7 Series, joining the already introduced two-mode BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid (earlier post).
BMW is also introducing EfficientDynamics systems in the new 7 Series (which is making is world debut at the Paris show) thereby bringing a range of technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration; on-demand management of ancillary units including the a/c compressor disconnected when not required; intelligent lightweight technology; active aerodynamics and tires with reduced rolling resistance to its top-end luxury sedan lineup. With new straight-six diesel and EfficientDynamics, the new 730d will offer average fuel consumption of 7.2 liters/100 kilometers (33 mpg US).
Six-cylinder diesel. The new diesel is being applied to start in the 730d and 330d sedans. The diesel develops maximum output of 180 kW (245 hp) at an engine speed of 4,000 rpm. Maximum torque in the 730d is 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) at 1,750 rpm; maximum torque in the 330d is 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) at 1,750 rpm. Weighing 185 kg (408 lb), the new six-cylinder diesel is another 5 kilos lighter than its predecessor.
The newly developed power unit comes with an aluminium crankcase and an 1,800-bar, piezo common-rail direct fuel injection system. An upgraded turbocharger system with variable intake geometry provides smooth development of power tailored to driving conditions.
The new 730d accelerates to 100 kph in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 245 kph (152 mph). The new 330d accelerates to 100 kph in 6.1 seconds and is limited electronically in its top speed to 250 kph (155 mph). Fuel consumption for the 330d is 5.7L/100km (41.3 mpg US) with 152 g/km CO2.
The new engine contributes to the 730d’s 10 kW increase in power on 9% less fuel; the new 330d offers a 6.5% improvement in both fuel consumption and CO2 over its predecessor. Both the new 730d and 330d are Euro5 compliant.
BMW BluePerformance. To further reduce NOx in the exhaust emissions, the new 330d may be equipped additionally with a NOx storage catalyst for after-treatment of exhaust gas in addition to standard oxidation catalyst. In its optional configuration with BMW BluePerformance technology, the new BMW 330d will meet all the requirements for the future Euro 6 emission standard, targeted for 2014.BMW’s AdvancedDiesel featuring BMW BluePerformance will be introduced in North America in 2008. This 3.0-liter, 265-hp straight-six with Variable Twin Turbo featured in both the BMW X5 xDrive35d and the BMW 335d comes with an SCR system to reduce NOx. BMW’s AdvancedDiesel with BMW BluePerformance will sell as a 50-state model.
Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid. The new Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid combines an eight-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor integrated in the transmission to provide extra drive power. BMW will also show its BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid that combines an eight-cylinder engine with a two-mode active transmission.
BMW plans to present ActiveHybrid technology in a production vehicle for the first time in 2009.

By the way, don't be surprised that the new 3.0-liter turbodiesel with BluePerformance will be available on the next-generation X3 due about a year from now. SUV practicality with over around 34-35 mpg fuel economy? I'll take it! :-)
