4 September 2008
Citroën will unveil a new diesel-electric hybrid crossover concept, the Hypnos, at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in October.

With a 200 hp (149 kW) engine, Hypnos combines dynamic performance with low fuel consumption and emissions (around 50 mpg US and 120 g/km of CO2).
Sister brand Peugeot is also introducing a new concept hybrid at the Paris show, the gasoline-electric hybrid RC. The hybrid RC is a four-door GT coupé designed to provide a very high level of efficiency both in terms of performance (with potential maximum power output of 313 bhp) and minimal impact on the environment (CO2 emissions of 109 g/km in the combined cycle or zero in electric mode). Enough of the concepts, build a diesel hybrid and let people buy it - a nice C6 or C4 dHybrid would be very nice.
For diesel, you would only need Edrive in cities, they are already very efficient in the country. If it was electric below 30 mph, you could more or less keep the ICE off in heavy traffic, which would greatly reduce local pollution (and noise), while increasing efficiency.
The problem will be cost, so the car makers should lobby for a tax break based on the amount of local pollution it will save (we can take it as a given that it will have low CO2 figures).
I live in a European city (Dublin) and you really can smell the diesel fumes when you go out the door in the morning. So anything (short of getting rid of diesels) which reduces this would be good.
Even a stop/start system would help - as some people have pointed out, they should almost be made mandatory.
(Although I don't agree exactly with this - low urban pollution should be made mandatory and let people find their own solutions on how to achieve it).
