Honda May Take Acura Brand To Russia

Nikkei. Honda Motor Co. may launch its Acura luxury brand in Russia in 2011 or later to increase its sales there.
“There is considerable potential demand for Acura in the Russian market,” Shigeru Takagi, head of Honda’s European operations, said Friday, revealing that the automaker is working out plans for a debut.
Honda already sells Acura vehicles in North America and China. Although sales of gas-sipping subcompacts are growing in advanced nations, Honda foresees demand for Acuras in Russia because of the strong popularity of luxury offerings and mid-size sedans there.
Honda is also planning to double its dealers to 100 over the next two or three years, and is increasing the annual output of its Turkish plant that supplies the Civic and City to the Russian and FSU market up to 60,000 from 50,000.
Russia may pass Germany to become the largest auto market in Europe this year, according to the most recent semi-annual report on the Russian Automotive Market from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC (PWC). (Earlier post.) For the first half of 2008, Honda’s Russian sales jumped 150% year-on-year to about 34,900 units. Honda is planning annual sales of 100,000 units within three years.
