Maruti Suzuki to Increase Contribution to Suzuki R&D on Small Engines

6 September 2008

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL), Suzuki Motor’s (SMC) production and distribution subsidiary in India, will scale up its R&D capability on engines of up to 1.2 liters in displacement, according to MSIL Chairman RC Bhargava, speaking at the company’s 27th Annual General Meeting in New Delhi.

The future belongs to small cars. Worldwide there seems to be no respite from increasing fuel prices. In addition, the commodity prices have also shot up manifold. Therefore, the demand for small, light-weight, fuel efficient cars would grow and strengthen. This trend is clearly visible in global markets and is likely to enter India as well.

The Government has laid down policies that favour small cars. We are at an advantageous position because we have an expertise in designing small cars. With demand for small cars going up we will quickly scale up our R&D capabilities to design cars that are best suited for the Indian market.

—RC Bhargava

Bhargava said under the direction of Osamu Suzuki, Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, MSIL will increase its contribution on the development work on small engines (of up to 1,200 cc) to 90%, with the rest being done in Japan. Currently MSIL contributes around 30% to the engine development work.

The future belongs to cars that are fuel efficient and lower on CO2 emission. SMC would work on developing hybrid, electrical, multi-fuel engines that help increase fuel efficiency and enhance environment protection.

—RC Bhargava

Maruti Suzuki will re-enter the European market with the new A-Star, the concept version of which was unveiled earlier this year in India. (Earlier post.) MSIL plans to export more than 200,000 units of this model by 2010-11. Maruti Suzuki is investing to set up a dedicated car terminal at Mundra port in preparation for the sharp scale up in exports.

The A-Star is a five-door hatchback featuring a newly developed Euro 5-compliant 1.0-liter aluminium gasoline engine with CO2 emissions lower than those of European competitors (target: lower than 109 g/km). Production in India begins in October.

There are groups that retrofit Minis and Smarts with super bike engines.

This seems like a trend in engines for future cars. Smaller displacement and higher output series/parallel hybrids. People will be amazed what you can get out of 1L.
