Furukawa Electric Plans 50% Boost in Capacity for Copper Foil for Li-ion Batteries
24 November 2008
Nikkei. Furukawa Electric Co., which controls 55% of the global market for copper foil used in batteries, plans to build a new copper foil factory to boost production capacity for foil used in lithium ion batteries by 50%.
The new facility, targeted to come online in September 2010, will be running at full capacity by the summer of 2012.
Furukawa Electric projects that automotive-use lithium ion batteries will go mainstream around 2010 and intends to supply a third of the total output for the auto industry.
Copper foil is used for anode current collectors in Li-ion cells. Furukawa currently supplies Sanyo Electric, Panasonic and Sony.
