Guangzhou Targeting 500km of Subway Lines by 2020
11 November 2008
People’s Daily. Guangzhou (China) Metro plans to extend its service to cover 230 km (143 miles) by the opening of the 2010 Asian Games, and plans to build a total of 20 lines covering 500 km (311 miles) by 2020.
Guangzhou Metro, which launched the first segment of Metro Line 1 in June 1997, currently has four lines covering 116 km with 66 stations. It currently carries an average of more than 1.6 million passengers per day.
According to reports, Guangzhou Metro Line 2 is the nation’s first line to have 70% of its equipment produced domestically. Its Line 3 is China’s fastest subway line and Line 4, adopting the linear motor mode, is the world’s most responsive subway line. Guangzhou is the first city in Chinese mainland to install platform screen doors and a rigid catenary in its subway system.

New light rail lines is the most that any city in the US can manage if that. Entranced by lithium batteries and super fast acceleration, practical economic solutions to mass or personal transit such as the Parry People Mover are ignored.
Catenary lines are now obsolete since the invention of the ZEBRA battery. Third rails (electric), conveniently placed, can be paired with ZEBRA batteries and flywheels for superior perfomance that never leaves a train stalled outside a station during a power failure.
It is possible, but not economic, for trains equipped with ZEBRA batteries to go hundreds of miles beyond a catenary or third rail.
Platforms with screens are long overdue. With unlimited possible automation, the Horizontalator is now possible for automatic public transportation over distances. Never more should a person enter a subway station and find no trains available for hours. Press a button and the Horizontalator appears in a few minutes. The tunnel has been paid for with tracks why not use it. There is no longer any need to keep the track (catenary) power on. Segments can be automatically turned on when the battery is low if necessary.
