Report: Audi Targeting Hybrid for Japan in 2012

6 November 2008

The Nikkei reports that Audi AG plans to release a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle on the Japanese market, possibly as early as 2012.

The hybrid will be based on the midsize Q5 sport utility vehicle that the German carmaker will unveil in Japan as early as mid-2009. The Q5 already sells in Europe.

Audi has joined forces with Porsche AG and Volkswagen AG to develop the hybrid technology that will power the new vehicle.

I would not have guessed that Japan would be a likely market for such a vehicle. I suppose they are planning a very limited rollout with very high markups targeting only the rich.
