NOAA: February 2009 Ninth Warmest February for Globe

16 March 2009

The combined global land and ocean surface average temperature for February 2009 was the ninth warmest since records began in 1880, according to an analysis by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC.

The analyses in NCDC’s global reports are based on preliminary data, which are subject to revision. Additional quality control is applied to the data when later reports are received several weeks after the end of the month and as increased scientific methods improve NCDC’s processing algorithms.

  • The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for February was 54.80 °F (12.67 °C), 0.90 °F above the 20th century mean of 53.9 °F (12.18 °C), ranking as the ninth warmest on record.

  • Separately, the global land surface temperature was 39.38 °F (4.1 °F), 1.58 °F above the 20th century mean of 37.8 °F (3.2 °C). The global ocean surface temperature of 61.25 °F (16.25 °C) ranked as eighth warmest on record and was 0.65 °F above the 20th century mean of 60.6 °F (15.9 °C).

  • The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for boreal winter (December-February) was 54.72 °F (12.62 °C), 0.92 °F above the 20th century mean of 53.8 °F (12.11 °C) and ranking eighth warmest.

  • Separately, the global land surface temperature for boreal winter was 39.31 °F (4.06 °C), 1.51 °F above the 20th century mean of 37.8 °F (3.22 °C), ranking as ninth warmest on record. The global ocean surface temperature of 61.20 °F (16.22 °C) ranked as seventh warmest on record and was 0.70 °e F above the 20th century mean of 60.5 °F (15.83 °C).

Based on NOAA satellite observations of snow cover extent, 10.7 million square miles (27.7 million square kilometers) of Eurasia (Europe and Asia) were covered by snow in February 2009, which is 0.4 million square miles (1.1 million square kilometers) below the 1966-2009 average of 11.1 million square miles (28.8 million square kilometers).

Satellite-based snow cover extent for the Northern Hemisphere was 17.4 million square miles (45.0 million square kilometers) in February, which is 0.3 million square miles (0.9 million square kilometers) below the 1966-2009 average of 17.7 million square miles (45.9 million square kilometers).

Arctic sea ice coverage during February 2009 was at its fourth-lowest February extent since satellite records began in 1979, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Average ice extent during February was 5.7 million square miles (14.8 million square kilometers). The Arctic sea ice pack usually expands during the cold season, reaching a maximum in March, then contracts during the warm season, reaching a minimum in September.

Very hot, dry conditions affected southern Australia during the end of January and beginning of February. An intense heat wave February 6-8 resulted in a high temperature of 119.8 °F at Hopetoun, Victoria, 7 Feb., surpassing the previous record of 117.0 °F set in January 1939. This is a state record and perhaps the highest temperature ever recorded for such a southerly latitude. The hot, dry conditions contributed to the development of Australia’s deadliest wildfires in history.

China declared its highest level of emergency for eight provinces that were suffering from their worst drought in 50 years. The drought conditions, which began in November 2008, affected more than 4 million people and more than 24 million acres of crops.

A strong winter storm brought heavy snow to parts of the United Kingdom on 2 February, disrupting transportation and bringing London to a virtual standstill. The event, in which up to 12 inches of snow fell in southeastern England, was the UK’s most widespread snow in 18 years, according to the UK Met Office.

I wish they could give us that amount of detailed information on Mars, Jupiter, Pluto and the moon Triton as to why they are warming in excess of 2 degrees celsius.

.

One can only hope that NOAA, once again, will not have to go back and correct their temperature records. Are they accurate measurements from the correct month this time?

Now lets all run in circles and scream about Global Warming®! This article certainly warrants multiple panic attacks as well as a massive government takeover of private businesses and lives.

Yes Goracle, lets BS about a sensor malefunction of used to present daily information and not point out that
in the article itself it said "...preliminary data, which are subject to revision. Additional quality control is applied to the data when later reports are received several weeks after the end of the month and as increased scientific methods improve NCDC’s processing algorithms." The way that real science is done instead of processing it through bias as your comments show.

Six weeks of wrong data that was discovered by themselves looking at the data. Wow. Maybe you or anyone else should read the impact of the error of the F15 sensor drift.

http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/2009/022609.html

I remember a little faux pas with satellite data showing no temperature increases as a constant point with the denialists. It didn't jib with any other geophysical evidence. On further examination it was discovered that the satellite's orbit was slowly decaying and that wasn't compensated for in the data. Tres surprise. One of the denialists strongest so called pieces totally wiped.

What a surprise that denialists don't like it. Nothing like responses based on gut reactions especially from people with concrete worldviews.

As for the other planets showing warming. What a load. Satellite data clearly measures the solar output this planet receives. Guess what, it doesn't explain didley because it hasn't gone up.

What other geophysical factors warm up the other planets is germaine to them and them alone. It's a red herring explanation to try to marginalize the field. Too bad so many people take the bait.

Marginalize, obfuscate, ..., the usual. AGW wasn't even mentioned in the article until the denialists did their usual knee jerk response to any and all data. Which is very appropos because their response had very little intelligence in it as usual.

Looks like the paid alarmists are thinning as fast as the Arctic ice cap...

But I'm gonna shriek in terror and run around the room anyway! Will NOAA ever live down the shame?

What is happening here at Green Car Congress? Why the occupation now of this site be people who just spew right-wing disinformation? Like the smoke screen that used to be put up about the dangers of cigarette smoke by the industry, their appologists, and the true believers? Can't you guys go be happy talking and listening to Rush Limbaugh and crew...
Or perhaps you are accomplishing that which you want to-throw up enough BS so that everyone gets disillusioned, and gives up on real change? sort of like the paid informant or saboteur...

Looks like the "Congress" here is being subjected to a harsh dose of reality. Healthy. But discomforting.

Paid denialism is an industry now.  People are paid to create an impression of controversy or doubt where none really exists.
Like the smoke screen that used to be put up about the dangers of cigarette smoke by the industry, their appologists, and the true believers?
Where do you think the tobacco denialists went?  Some of the same people are paid climate denialists now; look up Fred Singer.

Actually, if you care to READ the science it's all very plain. Natural variation accounts for 90-98% of earth's climate. But, if you are looking to make money off scare tactics aimed at the human population - by all means, disregard the science:

Remember,

1. The earth is not warming
2. If it is warming, it is not man's fault.
3. If it is man's fault, the earth is not warming very much
4. If it is warming very much, a warmer world won't be bad
5. If it is bad, there's nothing you can do about it

China is opening 1-2 coal powered plants per week.
Let's tax our energy supply to make ourselves feel good and accelerate the move of our factories to China.

If anyone needs to read the science it's the anti-AGW crowd. A website isn't a science journal. It isn't peer reviewed. There is little to zero peer reviewed science that contradicts AGW.

AGW is the accepted view of every internationally recognized scientific organization. That includes ironically the petroleum scientists.

As for the ice cap. Let's take a look.
The picture was dated june/july. The arctic ice cap maximum is march/april, the minimum is sept/oct. So the july date is supposed to make people think that it's warm where they are and so it should be the least amount of ice. Total fallacy. By the time that picture was taken and the minimum ice cap is reached, over 50% of the ice would be melted. The other is that its a magnified picture of the area that has yet to melt anyway. Another is that a single picture with zero analysis is totally subjective and it's obvious where the bias lays.

Just because you can find others that share your views don't justify those views. It certainly isn't science.

China is also spending 2 times as much on alternative power than the US (over 10 billion in 2005 compared to US 5 billion). The cost of mitigating the effects of AGW will be bourne by the first world as the instructure we invested in becomes inadequate or even bypassed or destroyed. Katrina is the least of it. Elevated sea levels combined with surges can damage most coastal cities quite easily and the developed nations will also suffer from that. If the first world actually spent money on improving itself instead of the dead ended self indulgent stuff that they do, then they wouldn't be in the straights that they are in now.

aym:

You could even add that China will be the first nation to:

1) capture CO2 from their coal fired power plants on a very large scale.

2) build 120+ large up-to-date nuclear power plants.

3) have 10+ million homes equip with solar panels.

4) mass produce EVs and PHEVs.

5) export EVs and BEVs.

6) have 10+ million EVs and PHEVs on the roads.

7) etc etc

Climate Change is caused by the Sun's activity..
Global warming is caused by Greedy politicians wanting to Tax us even more.

There is nothing wrong with improving the efficiency of cars but it's a total waste to focus any effort on lowering CO2. The plants of the world love all the extra CO2.

Posted by: robertg222 | June 18, 2009 at 10:23 AM

Yes February was the ninth warmest month for the globe but also the coldest June for the Northeast and Europe. I was turning on the heat just yesterday and I happen to live in Boston.

".....but it's a total waste to focus any effort on lowering CO2. The plants of the world love all the extra CO2." Mr Robertq222, do you have proof of that?

I really wonder if there is a limit to the concentration of CO2 that plants can efficiently process. But using that logic, if plants love all the extra CO2, can we conclude that more oxygen is better for O2 breathing life forms? The answer is no - continual breathing of enriched oxygen can cause health issues. It also can be a fire hazard.

No need to spout right wing misinformation as someone mentioned. In my neck of the woods there was more snow last year than normal and my fuel consumtion for the winter was higher in spite the fact I was freezing my b__ls off.
