International Battery Introduces Standardized Modules for Large-Format Lithium-Ion Batteries

International Battery, a US-based manufacturer, designer, and developer of large-format lithium-ion rechargeable cells, modules and packs, introduced three classes of standardized modules for its large-format lithium batteries—Nested, Slim and Wide—to accommodate various customer-specific geometries. Each module can supply up to 4 kWh of storage.

These new modules, introduced at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference 2009 (AABC), incorporate eight large format International Battery cells connected in series. Each cell has a unique recognizable Battery Management System (BMS) board.

Modules can be connected in series or parallel configurations to meet the desired voltage and energy requirements. The system can accommodate 30 modules for a maximum voltage of 760V and can incorporate any of the company’s cells ranging from 40 to 200 Ah capacity per cell.

The cells are monitored and balanced by the BMS and provide information to a controller directly or through a systems’ control board that International Battery can provide. The BMS has sufficient intelligence to determine any pre-determined safety or operational non-conformance and provide for reliable implementation of a latchable interlock system.

Chemistries. International Battery presently offers six cell models in two chemistries achieving energy densities of:

  • 154 Wh/kg and 278 Wh/Liter in the 740 Wh 200 Ah lithium nickel cobalt manganese cell (NCM with graphite anode), or
  • 107 Wh/kg and 192 Wh/Liter in the 512 Wh 160 Ah lithium iron phosphate cell (LFP with graphite anode) International Battery uses Phostech iron phosphate material.

Water-based process. International Battery’s technology was originally based on an exclusive license from Chinese battery manufacturing company Thunder Sky. International Battery subsequently further developed both the cell design and fabrication processes, said International Battery director of engineering Tony Reis.

International Battery is focused on developing its manufacturing process rather than chemistries, Reis said, and envisions the potential of being chemistry agnostic at some point in the future.

The company is the only US manufacturer with a solvent-free, water-based process, Reis said. This lowers production costs, Reis said, by removing both the solvent cost as well as the cost of chemical disposal.

Nice concept .. what's the asking price?

If they come anywhere near Thundersky pricing expect a herd of drooling EV'ers to knock down their doors.

Probably not though ... China product @ US prices.

Thunder Sky had some quality problems. One guy online had a 20% failure rate DOA and they did not back the product.

A reasonably good approach to focus on the manufacturing and then license or develop their own chemistry. Clearly these kinds of QA issues will continue to dog the Chinese product - making way for new domestic manufacturing opportunities.

And in incremental modules - EP will love it.

I had contacted this company in April about purchasing batteries and/or systems. I would like to convert a car to electric but want a reasonably longer range (>100 miles) in a more comfortable car - small to medium-sized sedan. This cannot be done with Pb Acid batteries. My idea is to develop a prototype then offer packages to convert such cars.
However, International Battery refused to sell to me - apparently they are trying to link up with car companies. Here is a case where a single customer would like to make a purchase but this company will not consider selling its products to the small guy.
