VW Diesels Represented 26% of Its Total US Sales in June
2 July 2009
In June, Volkswagen’s diesels posted their best US sales month since their re-launch with 5,072 units, representing 26% of total Volkswagen new vehicle sales. Overall, VW sales were down 18% by volume in June 2009 to 19,027 units.
The Jetta SportWagen posted its best sales month yet with sales of 1,982 units. Clean diesel TDIs accounted for 81% of SportWagen sales, 40% of Jetta sedan sales, and 29% of Touareg sales.
Volkswagen of America is encouraged by the momentum of our clean diesel TDI sales. It appears that US consumers are starting to realize the many benefits of today’s clean diesels—vehicles that attain more than 30 percent better fuel economy while emitting 25 percent less greenhouse gas emission, all without sacrificing driving dynamics.

I wish they would put the 2.0TDI in the Passat and Passat wagon. I personally know quite a few friends who would love a big, truly fuel efficient wagon. The Passat is a great family car. The Prius, with its big battery pack and small trunk, doesn't cut it for a lot of families.

I have a Passat 1.9 TDI (2004). It is a great car. Is VW really not making this combination any more?

There's currently no Diesel Passat available in the US. I believe the last year was 2005. I have recommended that car to several friends looking for something big and fuel efficient.

I just worn myself out of my 1996 Passat TDI (1.9L) and bought a new Jetta TDI sedan. It's the difference between night and day. Fast and quiet and over 40 mpg highway. The new Jetta is a wonderful car and is as large as my old Passat. The new 2.0 L diesel has 60% more power than the old 1.9L diesel. VW could easier offer the new 2.0 L diesel in the the present Passat since you have to look twice at a Jetta and a Passat to tell them apart.

I suspect the VW Jetta TDI hurt the Honda Insight sales more than 2010 Prius sales. It really fits in between the Honda Insight and the 2010 Prius in just about every measure and is compatible in fuel economy to the Honda Insight except in the City.
