Webchat with Outgoing GM R&D Chief Larry Burns, 16 Sep

16 September 2009

Larry Burns, the head of R&D at GM for the last 11 years—the longest tenure since Charles Kettering—is retiring after 40 years of service on 1 October. Burns has been a major advocate within the industry for the reinvention of the automobile and the diversification of transportation energy. At GM, he has personally championed the electrification of the vehicle, connected vehicle technology, fuel cells, and a series of innovative advanced technology concept vehicles.

Burns will participate in a live webchat, hosted on GM’s Voltage site as well as on GCC, below, today, 16 Sep (Tuesday), at 3 pm EDT. He will share his perspective on several recent hydrogen developments, including Chevrolet’s Project Driveway passing 1 million miles of gas-free driving with no tailpipe pollution and the announcement in Germany of a partnership to build up to 1,000 hydrogen fueling stations by 2015.

Burns holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He also has a master’s degree in engineering/public policy from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University).

During eleven years as GM R&D head:

The three million dollar Aeroenvironment gasoline-free EV1 built for GM was crushed

Its advanced NiMH battery patents were sold to an oil firm

Hybrids were ignored and Toyota replaced GM as the world's largest auto maker

CAFE mileage fell - SUVs and US oil addiction grew

Billions of taxpayer dollars were wasted on hydrogen fuel cell vehicle R&D without a single vehicle sold

GM went bankrupt and became a ward of the State etc

Yep, there just aren't enough gold watches..

It was good to see GCC present the GM Webchat.

Many people asked how much a GM EV fuel cell cost and, as in prior auto articles, the price was neither acknowledged nor answered.

Perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars would seem a bit ridiculous.
