3 Fuel Cell Cars from 3 OEMs Complete 1,137km Demonstration Run in Japan

15 November 2009

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles from Toyota (the FCHV-adv), Nissan (X-Trail FCV) and Honda (FCX Clarity) completed a 1,137 km (706.5 miles) demonstration run from Tokyo to Fukuoka to demonstrate that they can go as far as gasoline-powered cars on a single fueling.

The total amount of hydrogen used in the process of driving the cars was 28.8k; average fuel economy was 118.4 km/kg (73.6 mi/kg).

The vehicles were refueled twice during the two-day journey. Drivers stayed overnight in Osaka.

Re-fueled twice during the journey.
If they arrive empty, that means they can cross 706/3 = 236 miles. Let's say 250.
Not bad but hardly "they can go as far as gasoline-powered cars on a single fueling"
I can do 650 miles, more than twice as much.

But then, I guess the real goal wasn't to prove that these cars can go as far as a classic car, but only that you don't have the fear of being stranded every time you take the car. If the infrastructure is OK, 250 miles is enough for me.

Great news and great fuel economy! Not bad for cars that aren't even for sale yet. I can't wait until they are.

I think the fuel cells are a great way to start looking at different ways to better use the abundant amound of hydrogen that the atmosphere holds, I think this trip was a step in the right direction and if we want to continue advancing in hydrogen, We need to look towards a P.D.E. The device was used in jets for a while, but disbanded because for a jet it just doesn't have the thrust, but i thingk the power can be altered in a car for use. It would be great for milage and it'll give the moter-heads what they love to hear, the roar of horsepower.

What means you "abundant amount of hydrogen that the atmosphere holds."?

H2 is mostly an energy conduit not a source.
