AASHTO To Issue RFP for IntelliDrive Deployment Planning By End of Year
3 November 2009
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) will issue an RFP before the end of the year for contractor assistance in development of a deployment plan that will implement AASHTO’s IntelliDrive Strategic Plan.
The IntelliDrive system—formerly known as Vehicle Infrastructure Integration or VII—will combine technology solutions such as advanced roadside infrastructure, wireless communications, advanced vehicle sensors, onboard computer processing, and GPS navigation to provide vehicles the capability to detect threats and hazards on the roadway and to communicate this to the driver through alerts and warnings.
The core of the IntelliDrive system is a high-speed network among vehicles (V2V); between vehicles and the roadside infrastructure (V2I); and between vehicles and mobile devices (V2D).
Within this overall network, it is envisioned that Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) operating at 5.9 GHz will be utilized for active safety applications; electronic tolling and payment applications; and real-time mobility applications; while other commercial communications media will support passive safety applications; and other mobility and agency transportation management and operations applications.
