Dongfeng Motor to Begin Exporting Vehicles to S. Korea
3 November 2009
JoongAng Daily. Newly-established Dongfeng Motor Korea (DFMK) will begin importing vehicles from Dongfeng Motor in China—the first incursion of China-built vehicles into the South Korean market. DFMK will sell four models: a one-ton truck, a commercial minivan and a six- and nine-passenger van from April 2010.
“The vehicles are 30 percent cheaper than Korean vehicles and will therefore be competitive with private entrepreneurs,” said Lee Chul-woong, a DFMK executive. “There will be no problem with getting technical certification from the Korean government because the vehicles were exported to markets in Europe and Singapore two years ago.”
DFMK decided to import the truck and vans before importing the passenger vehicle because the sedans are yet not up to the standards set by Korean automakers in their interior and engine. The vans and the small truck will have a better chance in the market because private entrepreneurs with small operations prefer trucks and vans with lower prices and higher quality.

So, if China can undercut S. Korean auto prices, is it possible that they can undercut GM, Ford and Chrysler in a few years? And take over the ICE and emerging EV market?
Umm, just maybe.
But then we can power these Chinese EVs with wind energy from Pickens’ Chinese made windmills, paid for (incidentally) by US stimulus money.
