UK putting £15M into cycling projects for mode of sustainable travel
8 February 2012
UK Transport Minister Norman Baker announced £15 million (US$24 million) of new funding that will enhance cycle routes across England and will also improve integration between cycling and rail at stations.
The investment, geared toward cycling, is in addition to the £560 million (US$890 million) Local Sustainable Transport Fund announced in January 2011.
Sustrans—the UK transport charity—will receive £8 million (US$13 million) for projects to enhance cycle routes across England. The remaining £7 million (US$11 million) will be allocated through the Cycle Rail Working Group—the body which brings together representatives of the rail industry and the cycling sector—to improve integration between cycle and rail at stations.
Measures will include safer and more convenient cycle racks, additional cycle parking and storage, and better access for cyclists. This will complement the £7 million that Network Rail is already spending in this area.
This fund underlines the firm commitment of the Coalition Government to sustainable transport. If we are serious about reducing carbon, then we need to get more people walking and cycling. But we must do it in a way that boosts the economy.

Both organizations will now work up the specific projects they intend to fund. The successful projects will be announced in March.
The Cycle Rail Working Group (CRWG) was established following a recommendation of the July 2007 Command Paper “Delivering a Sustainable Railway”. Sustrans is a UK-wide charity with more than 30 years experience of enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport. They are the coordinator of the National Cycle Network (NCN) which is now 13,500+ miles in length and is within 1 mile of just over 60% of the population.

I hope this is investent in cycling infrastructure that will actually have the objective of encouraging cycling.
Judging by the poor quality of schemes that have been implemented by many local authorities, schemes have been implemented with a hidden anti-car agenda. This is a subtle difference. But the latter becomes obvious when authorities have created intermittent cycle lanes that stop, usually at points on routes that bring cyclists directly into conflict with vehicles.
The idea should be to create choice that attracts people to the viable option of cycling, not to coerce people by strangling road capacity with cycle routes which are not fit for purpose. This practice has clearly has amounted to a lose-lose scenario.

Scott has good points. Often, short mile or two trips to a strip mall cause more wear-and-tear, gas use, require more time finding a parking space then a dozen trips by bike.
