Report: METI, Toyota, others to ally to develop rare-earth recycling tech

The Nikkei reports that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is joining forces with Toyota Motor Corp. and other major manufacturers to develop technology for recycling rare-earth metals.
Under the initiative, automakers and home-appliance manufacturers will tap government subsidies to establish a technology for recovering rare-earth metals from discarded motors and electronics. The ministry will earmark the necessary expenses in its fiscal 2013 budget request.
The goal is to have the technology adopted in fiscal 2014. The manufacturers hope to have recycled rare earths account for around 10% of national demand by fiscal 2025.
Japan currently relies on China for around 80% of the rare earth elements used in car motors and information technology equipment such as personal computers.
