Sciaky, Inc. to showcase additive manufacturing solution at TCT Live 2012; near-net shape parts from high-value metals

Sciaky, Inc., a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries (PSI) and a supplier of electron beam, advanced arc and resistance welding solutions, will feature its Additive Manufacturing (AM) process at TCT Live 2012 in Birmingham, UK.

Sciaky says that its Direct Manufacturing technology is the only large-scale, fully-programmable means of achieving near-net shape (i.e., close to the final shape) parts, made from high-value metals such as titanium, stainless steel, nickel and refractory alloys.

The process combines computer-aided design (CAD), Sciaky’s state-of-the art electron beam welding technology, and layer-additive processing. Starting with a 3D model from a CAD program, Sciaky’s fully-articulated, free-moving electron beam gun deposits metal, layer by layer, until the part is complete and ready for finish machining. Depending on the part being manufactured, deposition rates can range from 15 to 40 pounds of metal per hour.

Manufacturers can save significant time and money over traditional manufacturing methods with Sciaky’s Direct Manufacturing technology. We can make functional prototypes and production parts up to 20 feet in length and eight feet high, using a wide variety of high-density metals.

Interesting future manufacturing technology. Alternatively, 3D printers with liquid composites represent another way to produce future parts for BEVs and batteries, including graphene sheets.
