BYD to supply 50 e6 BEVs to greentomatocars for minicabs in London

24 October 2012

Under a newly signed a Memorandum of Understanding, BYD will supply greentomatocars with 50 of its battery-electric e6 models for trial use as minicabs in London.

greentomatocars is London’s second largest quality minicab service, with a fleet of 300. The company expects that the 50 electric BYD e6 will be available for its customers to use from the second quarter of 2013.

It is my aim that London’s minicabs and taxis will be zero-emission by 2020, which will have a major impact on air quality. Every year the fleet is getting cleaner, making our city an even more attractive place to live, work and visit. Encouraging many more electric vehicles is a key part of this transformation, so it is great news that greentomatocars has committed to operating 50 of these super clean machines from next year.

—Mayor of London, Boris Johnson

BYD has been supported in this deal by London & Partners, the Mayor’s official promotional organisation for London.

The five-seat e6 is a crossover vehicle featuring a 75kW motor and BYD’s own Li-ion iron phosphate batteries, which gives the car a range of up to 186 miles (299 km) on a single charge in urban conditions with a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h). The batteries can be fully charged and discharged for more than 4,000 cycles, according to BYD.

Excellent range, speed and cycles. Could be one of the ideal e-car to replace bankrupt petrol London Taxis Cabs.

Cities should insist more on e-cabs and e-buses to reduce air pollution, noise and liquid fuel consumption.

How big is that battery?

The BYD e6 5-door e-MPV has evolved since 2009. Battery pack has gone from 48 to 60 and 72 kWh. Battery pack size (in inches) is given as L = 69, W = 37 and H = 12.

Batteries can be charged to 50% in under 10 minutes and to 100% in about 20 minutes and are good for 4000+ cycles. Range between charges (in urban traffic) is claimed to be from 300 Km to 430 Km depending on capacity of battery pack installed.

Second generation e6 (2014/2015?) will most probably have higher performance, lower cost, lighter batteries with increased range between charges.

Extended range BYDs e6 MPVs will soon be available (as an option) with 2 smaller high efficiency e-motors instead of one large motor. Two motors will be used to enhance acceleration and braking energy recovery. One motor operation will be used for cruising to reduce energy consumption and extend range by x?. Secondly, a two motor system can give AWD to improve driving condition or when required on specific road conditions.
