Ram Truck confirms all-new commercial large van for N America based on Fiat Ducato

Ram Truck will develop a new large van for the North American market. The 2014 Ram ProMaster will go on sale beginning in the 3rd quarter 2013 and will join the smaller Ram Cargo Van as an additional van offering to compete with other full-size commercial vans.

Based on the Fiat Ducato, the Ram ProMaster will be significantly redesigned with familiar Ram Truck styling cues, offering features and powertrains preferred by North American commercial customers. The Ducato is now in its third generation with more than four million units sold worldwide.

Separately, Chrysler announced that Cummins Inc. has produced its 2-millionth diesel engine for Ram Trucks: a 350 hp (261 kW), 6.7-liter, in-line 6-cylinder turbo diesel with 800 lb-ft (1,085 N·m) peak torque rating. Cummins began supplying engines to Chrysler Group in 1988.

For 2013, Cummins-powered Ram-brand pickups and chassis cabs offer features that include:

  • Best-in-class torque and a 10% fuel-economy improvement;

  • Exclusive dual-inlet “Ram Active Air” that adjusts induction according to driving conditions for optimal performance;

  • “Smart” exhaust brake for smoother driving characteristics;

  • 15,000-mile oil-change interval;

  • A new cooling system for improved performance and durability;

  • B20 fuel capability

  • Next-generation Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and diesel exhaust fluid system with range of up to 4,000 miles between refills;

  • Dual fuel filtration system for enhanced reliability and durability in virtually every climate and environment; and

  • a 5 years/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

When the first Cummins diesel for Chrysler was launched in 1989, the 5.9-liter 12-valve in-line 6-cylinder turbo diesel was rated at 160 hp (119 kW) and 400 lb-ft of peak torque. In the 2013 Ram Heavy Duty pickups, the top-line Cummins engine makes 385 hp (287 kW) and 850 lb-ft (1,152 N·m) of torque.

Diesels account for nearly 80% of Ram Heavy Duty sales.
