SCF Group partners with Shell on LNG-fueled Aframax crude oil tankers

Russia-based SCF Group (Sovcomflot) recently signed an agreement with Shell Western LNG B.V. for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel the first Aframax crude oil tankers in the world to be powered by LNG.

California Governor signs $52B fuel tax and vehicle fee bill for transportation infrastructure; $100 ZEV fee

California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed into law SB1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. The bill will raise $52.4 billion over the next decade through an increase in fuel taxes and vehicle fees—including on zero emission vehicles (ZEVs)—to fix roads, freeways and bridges in communities across California and put more dollars toward transit and safety.

The package is funded in the following ways:

  • $7.3 billion by increasing diesel excise tax 20 cents (currently $0.13) on 1 November 2017.

  • $3.5 billion by increasing diesel sales tax to 5.75% on 1 November 2017.

  • $24.4 billion by increasing gasoline excise tax 12 cents (currently $0.30) on 1 November 2017.

  • $16.3 billion from an annual transportation improvement fee based on a vehicle’s value starting 1 January 2018

  • $200 million from an annual $100 Zero Emission Vehicle fee starting 1 July 2020.

  • $706 million in General Fund loan repayments.

DENSO and IBIDEN to collaborate on next-generation vehicle exhaust systems and vehicle electrification

Global automotive supplier DENSO Corporation and electronics and ceramics company IBIDEN Co., Ltd. formed a capital and business alliance jointly to develop next-generation vehicle exhaust systems. This collaboration will combine IBIDEN’s advantages in high-performance ceramic materials with DENSO’s advantages in developing products as systems to develop high-performance, simple and low-cost vehicle exhaust systems.

Oita team develops new process for producing hydrogen from ammonia without external heat source

Researchers at Oita University in Japan have developed an innovative process for the production of hydrogen from ammonia without the need for an external heat source to initiate or maintain the reaction. An open access paper on their work is published in the journal Science Advances.

Liquid ammonia (NH3) has been considered as a carrier (storage medium) for hydrogen that could alleviate the challenges of transporting, handling and storing hydrogen for commercial applications. However, the adoption of ammonia as a H2 carrier, especially for household and transportable devices, has been limited due to the lack of an efficient process for producing H2 and nitrogen by the oxidative decomposition of ammonia.

PNNL, GM team develops design principle for stable silicon anodes for Li-ion batteries

A team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), with colleagues from General Motors R&D, has developed a design principle for stable high-capacity Li-ion battery silicon (Si) anodes of controlled thickness swelling, and synthesized a porous Si/C-graphite electrode as an example.

Experimental data from the porous Si/C-graphite electrode showed excellent agreement with the theoretical design. The practical electrode (~3 mAh/cm2 loading) with ~650 mAh/g specific capacity had ~82% capacity retention over 450 cycles. The initial electrode swelling upon full lithiation is <20%. The calendered electrodes demonstrated ~56% end-of-life swelling and ~90% capacity retention after 200 cycles. A full-cell of Li(NiMnCo)O2 and the pre-lithiated anode demonstrated >84% capacity retention over 300 cycles. A paper on the work is published in the RSC journal Energy & Environmental Science.

Finland’s oldest ferry goes all electric with Visedo

The oldest operating ferry in Finland will on Saturday become the nation’s first all-electric passenger vessel after being fitted with Visedo power. The City of Turku will officially re-launch the historic Föri ferry tomorrow, complete with a new zero-emission electric drivetrain that will deliver greater efficiency, less noise and reduced operating costs.

Siemens to acquire a leading software provider for public transportation, mobility and logistics

Siemens is planning to acquire HaCon, a leading international provider of planning, scheduling and information systems for public transportation, mobility and logistics.The two parties have agreed not to disclose financial details. Pending the approval of antitrust authorities, the deal is expected to be concluded in the first half of calendar year 2017.

Schaeffler highlights latest version of UniAir electrohydraulic valve control at Vienna

At the Vienna Motor Symposium, Schaeffler is highlighting the latest generation of its UniAir fully-variable electrohydraulic valve control system, first introduced in volume production in 2009. The latest generation of UniAir also now allows vehicles in the upper-class automobile market to operate more economically and with lower emissions.

UniAir controls the engine valves based on cycles and offers an extended range of strategic options for matching engine operation to specific situations and requirements. This technology makes it possible to achieve significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, as well as a significant improvement in torque curves. By using UniAir, customized operating strategies for modern combustion processes, such as the Miller and Atkinson cycles, can also be realized in accordance with customer requirements.

FTA announces $55M for FY 2017 Low-No funding

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced the availability of $55 million of Fiscal Year 2017 funds (FTA-2017-003-TPM-LowNo) for the purchase or lease of low- or no-emission vehicles as well as related equipment or facilities (Low-No). Only $31.5 million is available under the Continuing Resolution that expires on 28 April 28 2017.

The main purpose of the Low-No Program is to support the transition of the US transit fleet to the lowest polluting and most energy efficient transit vehicles. The Low-No Program provides funding to State and local governmental authorities for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses, including acquisition, construction, and leasing of required supporting facilities.
