Toyota Boosts Prius Production

Toyota has increased its monthly production of Prius hybrids from 7,500 to 10,000, according to the Taipei Times. The increase comes in response to the rapid increase in demand in the US.

Year-to-date sales through May 2004 of the Prius almost doubled to 17,564 from 8,796 cars during the same period last year. Sales for the month of May alone jumped 233.7% to 3,962 cars from 1,233 during May 2003. The Prius represents 4% of the 437,778 cars Toyota has sold this year (both Toyota and Lexus brands) through May, or 2% of the 834,270 total cars and light trucks.

Overall, Toyota sales increased 11.6 year to date through May from 2003 to 2004.
