Jeep Liberty Diesel: Interest High, Production Low

Autoweek. About 14,000 people have called, sent e-mail messages or written to the Chrysler group to express interest in the 2005 diesel-powered Jeep Liberty. That’s nearly three times Jeep’s anticipated 2005 production of 5,000 U.S. units, says Jeff Bell, Chrysler group vice president of Chrysler brand and Jeep marketing.

The diesel Liberty will be highlighted in advertising scheduled to begin in the spring, Bell says. The diesel will go on sale in 45 states in early 2005. The vehicle cannot be sold in California and Northeast states with similar emission regulations.

A 2.8-liter common-rail diesel engine coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission will be optional on 2005 4x4 Liberty Sport and Limited models. VM Motori of Italy supplies the engine. The Chrysler group has said it can increase diesel production based on demand.

Glad to see that last bit about the ability to increase production. With the diesel Liberty, Chrysler has a great marketing opportunity to establish the leadership position for diesel in the US. Furthermore, the Chrysler group could take a lesson from their overseas cousins in the Mercedes Group and combine the diesel Liberty with biodiesel demonstrations—those should go over well in soybean territory here. But Chrysler has to stop thinking of the diesel platforms (or the hybrid platforms) as low-volume products for a quirky few.

I have been looking at a hybrid suv but the diesel sounds interesting to, how about a diesel hybrid Liberty?

Mike

A diesel hybrid is one of the best short- to medium-term solutions from a total energy/emissions point of view (especially if you run biodiesel in the diesel).

Diesel-hybrids are in use in transit buses (New York, Seattle and some other cities, and in some trucks, but no one is ready yet to bring a diesel-hybrid car or light truck to market.

DaimlerChrysler has been roadtesting a couple of Mercedes diesel-hybrid prototypes, so you may get that hybrid diesel Liberty at some point...but not anytime soon.

WAKE UP CHRYSLER/JEEP!
We want a diesel for the Wrangler! Just a statement from a JEEP consumer.
1994 Cherokee with 156,000 miles on it.
1997 Wrangler with 79,000 miles on it.

I purchaced a 2006 Liberty Limited Diesel in June and couldn't be any happier!
Diesel is as much as .20 less a gallon than regular in many stations in Jersey, not to mention the 23 - 24 mpg I get in around town driving (compared to the 16 I got in my Wrangler).
Also, the diesel is quicker and stronger than the gas versions of the Liberty I test drove (used model with 5600 mi on it - so it was broken in).
It's well build as far as I've seen, and with 1400 mi on the clock, I've had no problems yet (crosses fingers).
Get 'em while ya can!
