D1 Biodiesel JV in China
26 November 2004
D1 Oils (earlier post) is to entering into a joint venture with Chinese Chuan Technology Company Ltd, Chengdu. D1 Oils will own 51% of the new joint venture, which will develop jatropha-based biodiesel for the Chinese market. Under the agreement, D1 Oils China will have the rights to D1 Oils’ proprietary planting, growing and refining technology, and the ability to distribute blended biofuel in China under the D1 Oils brand.
D1 Oils China will include a refinery, currently under construction, with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes (approximately 6.1 million gallons) of biodiesel per year. The joint venture will have rights over an estimated 200,000 tonnes of existing jatropha nuts and two million hectares of land dedicated to future jatropha growth. D1 Oils is making no immediate cash investment in the joint venture. Its partners will provide $5 million for initial working capital.
The refinery is expected to come into operation next year. Contractual agreements, which will formalize the venture, are scheduled to be signed within sixty days.
D1 also recently announced the completion of its first successful trials of planting, growing media and tree propagation in Tamil Nadu, India.
According to D1 Oils, the jatropha trees, nurtured by D1’s proprietary approach, reached oil-bearing stage within a year of planting—more than six months ahead of expectation. The first harvests of oil-bearing seeds are expected within 12 weeks. On the basis of this trial, D1 Oils expects materially to reduce materially the cost of planting.
The successful results from India, once benchmarked and detailed, should enable us to reduce projected costs, accelerate harvesting and secure attractive yields furthering our drive to be the low cost provider of biodiesel and related feedstocks.
—Philip Wood, CEO D1 Oils
D1’s business plan is to establish modular, distributed refineries close to the point of crop production, which D1 will also partly own (in local partnership). The results of the agricultural trials thus become critical initial proof points for future investment in and business deals with D1. Hence, the benchmarking and detailing will be critical. D1 raised £13m in an IPO in London earlier this year.

Dear sir,
I am very happy to know about your progress in developing the Bio diesel based on Jathropa as an renewable feed stock.
Also the Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) or Bio-diesel liberated or derived from Jathropa seed oil is having a fine Cetane number for usage as a traffic fuel and an alternative best to the diesel of fossil sourced.
I wish D1 oils to have a good start with grand success in the promising country like CHINA as like happening in INDIA.
Once again our best wishes & profound regards,
D A PRASAD
