Hyundai Hybrid Concept: the Portico

Portico_1_1

Hyundai introduced its new Portico concept vehicle at the Chicago Auto Show. The crossover concept is designed to support the use of Hyundai’s hybrid drive system.

The Portico is powered by Hyundai’s new Lambda 3.3 liter V6 engine with aluminum heads and cylinder block.

The Lambda V6, which appeared this year as an option on the new 2006 Sonata, produces an estimated 237 hp (177 kW). This engine is the first member of Hyundai’s new Lambda engine family and incorporates DOHC 24-valve CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) technology and a Variable Intake System (VIS).

In the hybrid configuration, the Portico uses dual electric motors. The front electric traction motor delivers 110 kW (136 hp); the rear, 60 kW (83 hp).

Hyundai has been partnering with US-based Enova Systems (formerly US Electricar) for years on the research and development of all electric, hybrid electric, and fuel cell drive systems. Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) took equity stakes in Enova, and in 2003 the companies opened the joint Hyundai Enova Innovative Technology Center. (Earlier post)
