Maya 100 EV to Sell in Norway
19 May 2005

Electrovaya, a Canadian firm specializing in portable power systems and Tablet PCs, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Miljobil Grenland AS of Norway to market its Maya 100 electric vehicle and to promote the business of zero-emission electric vehicle technologies in Norway and neighboring countries.
Miljobil also issued an initial purchase order to Electrovaya, to support activities needed to showcase Electrovaya’s technology in Norway.
The Maya 100 ran in the 2004 Tour de Sol and won awards for Best Battery Electric Vehicle and the Technology Award. (A video of the Maya 100 in the 2004 event is available here.)
The Maya 100 uses a 40 kWh, 144V Electrovaya lithium ion superpolymer battery system that delivers a driving range of up to 230 miles (360 km) with a top speed of 80 mph (140 km/h). The batteries in the Maya are 100 Amp-hour modules purpose-built for electric vehicles only, and are designed to offer a 7-year calendar life with a cycle-life equivalent to 150,000 kilometers (93,225 miles) of operation.
On a 220V charger charging time is approximately 6-8 hours (overnight, off-peak charging). There is a 110V capability for opportunity charging. A rapid-charge option could be retrofit.

Electrovaya’s Li-ion superpolymer batteries presently offer an energy density of approximately 225 Wh/kg and 475 Wh/liter. The company has a research program underway to increase the cell energy density to beyond 330 Wh/kg and 650Wh/liter.
The Li-ion superpolymer batteries use a phosphate-based compound for the cathode, and a graphite/polymer anode. (Electrovaya uses a cobalt-based cathode for its mobile computing applications.) The company is targeting a cost of $270-300/kWh for the battery at moderate levels of production.
Electrovaya has developed its own system to handle surge power requirements in acceleration and hill climbing and associated battery issues such as thermal management, cycle life degradation and over-discharge.
The company has also developed a proprietary regenerative DC axial brush system motor with permanent magnets. The compact motor has an efficiency of 90%–95%, turbofan cooling, and a voltage of 120-150 V. Continuous power is 25 kW, maximum power is 42 kW. The peak torque is 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
Pricing in the Miljobil deal is still confidential, but the current early adopter price in North America is US$70,000 for the entire vehicle, batteries and onboard charger.
Miljobil Grenland AS, a professional fleet operator and marketer of Clean Zero Emission vehicles since 1997, is owned principally by Skagerak Energi, the regional utility company; Norsk Hydro, a $25 billion leading European oil, energy and light metal company with operations in 40 countries; and Bellona, a major environmental foundation.

Whilst the big car firms try and get a hydrogen replacement for todays vehicle expectations, many smaller companies seem to be quickly overtaking them on their electric blindside. This is a very impressive looking vehicle! I'd be interested to know if it is liable to the flammable battery problems that seem to plague lithiums.

I currently drive a Solectria EV. When it is time to replace my lead acid gel cells, are there lithium batteries (and charger) available for sale? Would like 144-170 volts, 200 amp surge and 10+ KWH.

GREAT!!! NOW HERE IS A REALLY GOOD EV THAT WOULD BANKRUPT THE PEOPLE WHO NEED THEM THE MOST(IF THE HINTED AT RETAIL OF US$70,000 TURNS OUT TO BE CORRECT). EVs WILL BECOME TRULY RELEVANT WHEN THEY ARE MARKETED AFFORDABLY TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC; SOMETHING I EXPECT TO SEE IN ABOUT A DECADE OR LONGER. SURE HOPE THE OIL HOLDS OUT 'TIL THEN!!

Hi, congratulation to Miljøbil Grenland - actually only a few km from here.
I have been waiting for that for quite some time. Myself, I am driving a Volkswagen Citystromer. And I really hope that these batteries will become available for an acceptable price when I shall replace my current battery bank in a year or two. In the meantime, I am carefully following this subject.

I'm a electric cars seller and I hope to have chance to buy and sell the MAYA 100 in Spain. His price is high but this type of electric car has a big future with the oil price.
Best regards to all EV friends.

$70,000US! Did I read this correctly? Don't build a lot of them. At that price you won't sell ANY! The Arab oil producers are very pleased. They have a lot of oil to sell. They willlower their price and put you out of business. We'll have an ice age, yet.

I am writing this comment as a Author of "How I made a quater million dollars in 2 days and due to the fact that I am former Supertanker/ships Captain and Petroleum Oil consultant and in Maritime oil Transportation business for 32 years.
I read in Magazine about Maya 100. I am sure that in less than few years cost of similar cars can easily bee 15-25,000US$. Its just a matter of how US Govt and congress looks at this.
Oil and car makers form a very powerful lobby and have tremendous political power and Maya 100 concept has power of altering world economy and making many more Enrons out of todays Wall Street favourites.
By giving gasoline or diesel free cars to public at 15,000$ is definitely possible for each and every nation but can you believe this will stop giving them income of 30,000 to 40,000 per year per family (taxes, Cost of cars, gas, diesel, car parts etc)
Surely Oil majors and car makers along with law makers will prevent this. That is why 70,000$ is a prohibitive price of Maya 100.
What happened to Natrium (Crystler) a family van you could drive from Canada to Florida for 10$ of soap water (Hydrobromide solution). You need two drops of oil to grease door hinges every year. No pollution at all. No noise either. Same fate will be for Maya 100.
All the best.
Truly,
Capt.Sanjay Mahadeshwar.

Does it support V2G? It's all well and good to beat the oil price and keep the air clean, but with vehicle to grid, we can make solar and wind competitive at the same time AND make money from the investment in batteries. Don't fall for half the solution. Insist on V2G! (And insist on a standard plug too - globally)

"Rome wasn't built in a day." And reasonably priced EVs aren't here yet. The picture looks good. I hope you guys can eventually get the price down.
