Shanghai Auto Displays Range of Alternative and Hybrid Vehicle Technologies

Shanghai Automotive (SAIC) put on display at the 2005 Shanghai International Industrial Expo some of its accelerating R&D work in alternative and efficient vehicles, including a prototype of the hybrid Touran under development with its partner Volkswagen. (Earlier post.) .
Exhibits included alternative fuel engines (dimethyl ether engines (DME) for city buses, methanol engines for sedans); hybrids (buses in addition to the Touran); and fuel-cell prototypes (multi-purpose vans (MPV) and sedans).
In addition, the company showed the new TDI Passat, and a Euro-4 compliant Ssangyong MPV and Cadillac SRX. SAIC now owns a majority of the Korean automaker Ssangyong. The company has announced partnerships in developing hybrid and fuel cell vehicles with both Volkswagen and General Motors, with each of which SAIC has joint ventures underway.
The hybrid Touran is due out by 2008 for the Olympics.
