GM Holden Updates Engines to Euro-3 Compliance

GM’s Holden division in Australia has updated its domestic and imported gasoline vehicle range to comply with Euro-3 level regulations (ADR 79/01), which came into effect in Australia on 1 January 2006. The EU has now moved to the more stringent Euro 4.

Australia has been under Euro-2 level guidelines (ADR 79/00) since 2003. Euro-4 level compliance for diesels will come in 2008.

Current exhaust emission limits (ADR 79/00 or Euro 2) restrict hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen emissions to 0.5 grams per kilometre and carbon monoxide to 2.2 gm/km. Euro 3 requirements restrict hydrocarbon emissions to 0.2 gm/km, oxides of nitrogen to 0.15 gm/km and carbon monoxide to 2.3 gm/km.

The 3.6-liter Alloytec engine introduced in the VZ Commodore series in 2004 required minor changes such as new fuel injectors and a new exhaust catalyst and calibration to meet Euro 3 requirements.

The 6.0-liter L76 alloy engine, a member of GM’s fourth generation small block V8 family, is new to Holden for 2006. The engine delivers peak output of 260kW (348 hp) at 5600 rpm and peak torque of 510Nm at 4400 rpm when tested with premium unleaded gasoline. The engine was developed as Euro-3 compliant.

Holden has not initiated GM’s cylinder deactivation technology—“Active Fuel Management”—on the 6.0-liter engine.

The 3.2-liter engine averages 11.7 liters/100 kilometers (20.1 mpg US) across all the Holden models in which it is applied; the 6.0-liter engine averages 14.3 l/100km (16.5 mpg US) in its applications.

It's actually a 3.6 litre v6 engine. Check out this press release

http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet?target=http://image.emerald.gm.com/gmnews/viewpressreldetail.do?domain=20&docid=21644

It has different fuel economy ratings depending on power output and the model it's fitted to ranging from 11 litres/100km on the base model sedans to 14 litres/100km on the Crewman Cross 6 AWD. The V8 ranges from 14l/100km to 15.6l/100km depending on model. Holden will likely introduce cylinder deactivation and more advanced transmissions in the all new Commodore and Commodore based models coming up starting late this year to improve fuel economy and performance.

Could you coment on the 6WF1TD engine that Isuzu is offering in their CYZ-51Q truck. Specifically could you comment on their fuel consumption. Their claim i that we can receive 25 MPG under certain conditions. Is this for real?
