DaimlerChrysler Kits Out an F-Cell as a Police Vehicle

The F-Cell police vehicle.

DaimlerChrysler has delivered the world’s first fuel-cell–powered police vehicle to the Wayne State University Police Department in Detroit. The Mercedes F-Cell will serve as a supervisor’s vehicle on and in the immediate vicinity of the campus.

The Wayne State Police Department A-class F-Cell vehicle will be refueled at NextEnergy’s new hydrogen fueling station. The car will serve as a learning laboratory for students in WSU College of Engineering Alternative Energy Technology, the US’s first master’s-degree program in alternative energy.

The F-Cell’s entire fuel-cell system is housed in the floor of the vehicle, leaving full use of the passenger and cargo spaces. It has a range of approximately 100 miles and a top speed of 85 mph. The electric motor develops 88 hp (65 kW), enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 16 seconds. The stack has been developed by the DaimlerChrysler cooperation partner, Ballard Power Systems.

DaimlerChrysler says it has spent more than $1 billion in fuel cell vehicle research and development. No other manufacturer has accumulated more data or driven more zero-emissions miles: more than 1.2 million.

This is the old model F-Cell, if I'm not mistaken. The 100kW B-Class F-Cell was introduced last year.

Unrelated observation: it's a non-domestic "police" vehicle.

Mike

That’s right--it's the earlier A-class F-Cell with the lower output.

It's also not the F600 Hygenius...

DaimlerChrysler put together a nice piece on the Mercedes F600 Hygenius fuel cell vehicle in their Issue 2 / 2005 High Tech Report. The Hygenius is even featured on the cover in addition to the write up on
pages 10-21. There is an additional write up on hydrogen safety on pages 50-53.

The Issue 2 / 2005 High Tech Report is currently available in a zip file which is accessible on the right hand side of this page:
