International and ESW Launch New Catalyst-Enabling Product For Diesel Retrofits

International Truck and Engine Corporation and Environmental Solutions Worldwide (ESW) are launching a new proprietary diesel engine catalyst-enabling technology, targeted at the school bus retrofit market.

The new product is an engine exhaust tube designed to be installed as a direct replacement to the existing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) factory unit. This tube is located between the engine turbocharger and the existing muffler. The partners will introduce the product at International’s Parts and Service Expo 2006 on 10 April 2006.

Current retrofitting of school buses with high performance catalytic aftertreatment devices is limited by the temperature of the engine exhaust at the inlet of the aftertreatment device.

A sufficiently high temperature is critical to sustain the performance of the catalyst in its application. Exhaust temperature can vary by the engine duty cycle, operator driving characteristics or ambient weather conditions. Too low a temperature will cause high-performing catalyst technologies to fail prematurely or to be excluded from being used on a larger cross-section of applications.

The products currently in the market addressing temperature deficiencies are either cumbersome reflective blankets or a tube wrapping with insulation strip materials. These low-tech solutions are expensive, provide minimum heat retention, are bulky in design, are difficult to install, and generally lack field durability.

The new TempMax tube is a direct replacement technology designed to deliver maximum heat energy directly to the aftertreatment device with very little temperature loss and without resorting to additional external insulation materials.

The TempMax also provides a reduction in exhaust sound, with the added safety feature of maintaining a significantly lower temperature on the tube’s outer surface.

IC Corporation, North America’s largest school bus manufacturer, is a subsidiary of International Truck and Engine. Environmental Solutions Worldwide manufactures and markets a line of catalytic emission control products and catalytic conversion and support technologies for diesel, gasoline and alternative fueled engines for a multitude of applications.
