New CNG, LPG Cars for India
20 July 2006
Maruti’s new LPG WagonR |
Several major automakers, including Maruti Udyog, Tata, Ford India, and Hyundai, are expanding their line-up or introducing their first-time offerings of alternative-fueled cars in the Indian market.
Maruti Udyog, Suzuki’s Indian subsidiary, introduced India’s first LPG-powered car—the WagonR Duo—on Wednesday along with a new version of the WagonR. The new WagonR is about 10% more fuel-efficient than its predecessor, and the dual-fuel LPG version offers an operating cost about 33% less than that of the gasoline model, due to the price difference of the fuels.
The WagonR Duo uses a 1.0-liter four cylinder engine, and delivers 64hp (48 kW) of power and 84 Nm (62 lb-ft) of torque in gasoline mode, and 57.5 hp (43 kW) and 77 Nm (57 lb-ft) with LPG.
The Duo uses a toroidal LPG tank that fits into the spare-wheel well. The car has a combined gasoline-LPG range of 800 km (497 miles).
Hyundai is preparing to introduce a similar gas-powered version of Santro, according to a report in the Times of India.
Also on Wednesday, Tata Motors launched the Bharat Stage III (equivalent to Euro 3) compliant CNG versions of the Indica and the Indigo Marina. The company had first introduced a Bharat Stage II compliant CNG Indica in the National Capital Region (NCR) in 2001.
The CNG option is now available as an aftermarket conversion at the dealer level through a partnership with Shrimankar Gas Car Services, the Indian distributors for Bedini CNG kits from Italy.
The dual fuel vehicles retain their original 37-liter gasoline tank, and add a 60-liter CNG tank. The car has a driving range of 140 km (87 miles) on CNG.
Ford India announced that it will launch compressed natural gas (CNG) versions of its cars by the end of the year, with the first application being on the Ford Ikon. The Ikon, according to India’s Business Standard, is one of the poorer selling models. For the first six months of the year, ford India sold 23,758 cars of which the Fiesta represented around 20,000, or about 84%.
India has the fifth largest fleet of natural gas vehicles in the world, according to statistics from the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles. As of March 2006, India had 248,000 CNG vehicles on the road—almost twice that of the US’s 130,000, but far behind the million-plus fleets of Argentina, Brazil and Pakistan.
(A hat-tip to John Baldwin!)
It is kind of mystery for me how LPG fuel is overlooked in any respect. I would touch only one thing: performance applications:
Propane injection in intake air increases max diesel power up to 30% (20% is more sensible)
LPG fuel costs less then regular gasoline, yet could support about 7% max power increase over premium gasoline in turbo/super charged or stroked engine cars.
In any application LPG offers 70+% less engine wear and substantially prolongs oil changing intervals.
It is ideal low-cost substitution to performance carb engines.
It is inherently low-emission fuel even without 3-way cat and lambda control.
Why?!!

And these cars can be run on renewable bio gas.
They had the right idea in Beyond The Thunderdome.

The Center for American Progress has kicked off a campaign for American energy independence called Kick the Oil Habit. Find out more and take the pledge at www.KickTheOilHabit.org and watch Mark Pike and his buddies try to drive across the US using only ethanol - their video blog is available on You Tube. We need your help - you can make a difference - contribute to the collective genius (and bring a friend). Thanks!

I find it highly amusing that suzuki has named a car after the head of GM! Especially one running on gas.

Two lies don't make a truth.
The Center for American 'Progress' campaign to kick the oil habit is no progress. Ethanol is not a renewable substitute for oil, not even close. Ethanol is grown with huge amounts of energy + fertilizers + pesticides made from ... what else ? oil + natural gas by 'farmers' who don't give a hoot about the land, you, me, themselves or the planet, devastate the watershed, polute air, water, soil, food with vast amounts of carcinogens and mutagens, poison children, men, women alike, are sold slaves of the genetically modified
and pesticide corporations, use fertilizer, chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, diesel transportation, diesel tractors, and guess where all that comes from ? oil...yes ?
If in doubt, read the published research papers in peer reviewed scientific journals by Prof. Patzek, UC Berkeley, and Prof. Pimentel, Cornell U. The energy balance of ethanol is at least negative 6:1, ie, pay for six gallons of gas, drive one, could be worse, plus all the above, not the positive 1:1.2 or 1:1.3 pink rosey future without any consequences claimed by the industry peddlers.

The energy needed to maintain the low temperature in LNG tank, where does it come from. Does it take from the NG fuel itself. And how much NG energy does it consume in 1 month. Any idea.

There are DMe developments in CHina today:
LPG is mainly used as residential & industrial. The demand is increasing in Japan, China, India and Southeast Asia. LPG price is estimated to be increasing due to market growth in future. DME is very competitive against LPG price and LPG substitute is one of most potential market for DME. Pure DME combustion with household cooking gas stove for LPG was tested in Japan and it was reported that some modification would be needed. In China DME is mixed with LPG and the mixture without modification. DME can be blended up to 20% with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and used for household cooking and heating.
If you would like to know more on the latest DME developments, join us at upcoming North Asia DME / Methanol conference in Beijing, 27-28 June 2007, St Regis Hotel. The conference covers key areas which include:
DME productivity can be much higher especially if
country energy policies makes an effort comparable to
that invested in increasing supply.
By:
National Development Reform Commission NDRC
Ministry of Energy for Mongolia
Production of DME/ Methanol through biomass
gasification could potentially be commercialized
By:
Shandong University completed Pilot plant in Jinan and
will be sharing their experience.
Advances in conversion technologies are readily
available and offer exciting potential of DME as a
chemical feedstock
By: Kogas, Lurgi and Haldor Topsoe
Available project finance supports the investments
that DME/ Methanol can play a large energy supply role
