SES and Quantum Fuel Auto Engine Genset with Syngas
18 September 2006
Synthesis Energy Systems and Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide announced the successful operation of the world’s first engine generator using synthesis gas (syngas) as fuel. The engine generator set, a 125kW Kohler engine based on a General Motors 8.1 liter V-8 block, successfully and repeatably produced stabilized power.
The syngas used as fuel was identical to syngas produced by the U-Gas coal fluidized-bed gasification technology developed by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and licensed to SES. Syngas from coal gasification usually is targeted to fuel large combustion turbines for power generation. SES power generation facilities include standardized 60 MW, 120 MW, 180 MW and 300 MW modules.
Successful operation of the generator set is a major step forward in the cost effective utilization of Synthesis Gas. The operation of an automotive engine as well as power production from gas created by our proprietary U-Gas(R) technology demonstrates the flexibility to use syngas in a wide array of applications, including power generation.
—Timothy Vail, President and CEO
Earlier this year, SES awarded a contract to Quantum to develop the world’s first syngas-powered generator set under a contract engineering/development program. Quantum is an industry leader in the development of automotive systems based on hydrogen fuel.
I was throwing away a bunch of old magazine articles this morning. One of them had a picture of an east euopean vehicle from the 1930s that had a charcoal burner on it, which produced a combustible gas that powered the engine.

Some future vehicle will be coal syngas powered, imagine the patriotic marketing that could go with it!

There are developments in DME in China:
Currently, the market trend today is such that many Chinese coal chemical companies are moving towards optimising low cost and abundant coal feedstock for expansion into DME production.
If you would like to know more on COAL to Syngas to DME developments, join us at upcoming North Asia DME / Methanol conference in Beijing, 27-28 June 2007, St Regis Hotel. The conference covers key areas which include:
DME productivity can be much higher especially if
country energy policies makes an effort comparable to
that invested in increasing supply.
By:
National Development Reform Commission NDRC
Ministry of Energy for Mongolia
Production of DME/ Methanol through biomass
gasification could potentially be commercialized
By:
Shandong University completed Pilot plant in Jinan and
will be sharing their experience.
Advances in conversion technologies are readily
available and offer exciting potential of DME as a
chemical feedstock
By: Kogas, Lurgi and Haldor Topsoe
Available project finance supports the investments
that DME/ Methanol can play a large energy supply role

Ever since the increase in crude prices, there have been steady rise in the fuel prices at short intervals. It is possible as there is no viable alternate fuel to serve.
The core sectors such as fertilizer industry can manufacture the alternate eco-friendly fuel Dimethyl ether. Dimethyl ether is a good substitute for diesel , LPG. and power plant fuel. If fertilizer industry is allowed to produce Dimethyl ether, the cost of the fuel could be much less than the conventional fuels. It is only required to add on facilities for the synthesis of Dimethyl ether with the existing infrastructure. Coal based fertilizer units will have the advantage since they will have to depend only on coal/lignite .
The fertilizer industry which is facing closure due to economic /market considerations, should rise up to the occasion for the diversification to alternate fuel Dimethyl ether, so that they need not face the threat of closure.
