Thailand May Import Palm Oil for Biodiesel
18 March 2007
TNA. Thailand may allow imports of palm oil to produce biodiesel due to a shortage of palm oil in Thailand.
Local production of palm oil for use in the manufacturing of the alternative fuel may be insufficient this year, according to Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand.
Imports of palm oil may have to be made carefully as they may pose a negative impact on the biodiesel production plan by Thai Oleochemicals, a subsidiary of PTT Chemical Pcl., scheduled to start late this year with a production capacity is 600,000 liters daily.
To encourage adoption of B5, Thailand is subsidizing the biodiesel blend to a price lower than conventional diesel. The government is studying standardizing all diesel on a B5 blend.
