The NHTS runs 35,000 kilometers in length, and was begun almost two decades ago. The NHTS covers all mega-cities with a population of more than 1 million, and 93% of the big cities with populations of more than 500,000.
China’s total expressway network has reached 53,000 kilometers, making it the second in length in the world behind the US. China plans eventually to build 34 expressways with a total length of 85,000 km, incorporating cities with a populations of more than 200,000 and major tourist destinations.
