Electrovaya Launches Maya-300 Low-Speed Electric Vehicle; Using ExxonMobil Separator in Batteries

Electrovaya’s Maya-300 will be a zero-emission passenger car with a range of up to 120 miles per charge.

Electrovaya is launching the Maya-300, a zero-emission, low-speed, all-electric vehicle. It will have an extended range of up to 120 miles on a single charge, powered by Electrovaya’s Lithium-Ion SuperPolymer battery technology with integrated iBMS (intelligent battery management system).

The Maya-300 will use Electrovaya’s lithiated manganese oxide MN-Series batteries with a balanced energy and power density optimization. (Earlier post.) The MN-Series is Electrovaya’s preferred chemistry for transportation because it offers up to 40-60% higher energy density with comparable safety characteristics to its Phosphate-Series offerings.

The Maya-300’s battery system incorporates battery separator films from ExxonMobil. (Earlier post.) The advanced performance separators exhibit enhanced permeability, higher meltdown temperature and melt integrity without compromising the shutdown temperature and mechanical strength. The higher meltdown temperature significantly increases the film’s thermal safety margin.

Electrovaya recently introduced its upgraded version-3 iBMS for transportation applications. The iBMS has been designed for 15V and 48V modules which may be integrated to form intelligent Battery Systems from 48V to 710V.

The iBMS is an integrated, CAN-bus solution with fail-safe capabilities. It optimizes the battery system for optimal performance at a cell and module-level, protects the system and provides system-level interface communications to optimize the battery system together with other elements such as motor, controller and charger.

The iBMS consists of both distributed and system control intelligence integrated in the battery system design.

Top speed of the Maya-300 is electronically regulated to either 25 or 35 mph, as per state regulations. The on-board battery charger allows for convenient recharging with standard 110V outlets.

This announcement complements several other Electrovaya clean transportation applications, including the Maya 100 EV (earlier post) and conversions of Ford Escape Hybrids to plug-in hybrids (earlier post).

My first thought was "completely unrealistic, will never happen". However, this could be an idea adopted at some point by historic towns. Venice for starters.


Why do so many fear driving small Electric Vehicles (EVs)? Its because you can die more readily in small electric cars....tho many fewer than motorcyclists die per 1000 accidents.
However, advocates of big Internal Combustion Engines(ICE) don't mind killing someone else...even if its children that live, school & play near freeways who die via ICE pollution. Reports detailing lung & heart disease & death due to inhalation of fine & nano particles emitted by ICE are mounting. Yes, our grudging actions to clean auto pollutions back in the 70's, 80's & 90's wasn't enough.
Yet, it is the curmudgeons that didn't want EPA pollution controls 30 years ago that take credit for pollution gains now...& now state we don't need further ICE cleaning...or worse, just don't pay attention to the health reports now.

Let us work to get electric storage densities way up, electric charge times way down, & EV numbers way many. May ICE die(an economic death), that people will live. Long live EVs.


This is an enclosed golf cart, very popular in large retirement communities for moving around and going to the golf course. Some of them have license plates and are used to go a nearby restaurant ect..

The low speed PEV is fine as a second car ...

But we have an ideal PEV solution available to the rest of our personal transportation needs with technology available now.

The really cheap Thunder Sky batteries are limited to 2C. Of course that means a big enough pack to run the car at all gives a 300 km range at 100 km/hr, and takes 2 hours to charge at a reasonable voltage supply (220).
Now if we could have them available, and “pay-plugs” in the shopping malls so we could extend the range when on trips ... it works for me.

Sure new technology will get better, but there is nothing wrong with going with what we know is proven to work.

I also live in a major US city. We have all the same large vehicles. I share the same lanes on the same busy roads with them every day, ON A BICYCLE. Take it from me, the aggressive cabbies and cell-phone-wielding SUV drivers are far more dangerous.

The PROBLEM is not buses and ambulances or even delivery trucks. Bicyclists and lightweight car owners are certainly not the problem.

The problem is reckless driving, and the ever-increasing size of passenger vehicles is doing nothing to curb it. It's almost as if surrounding yourself with a moving fortress of steel is an excuse for endangering others. Like: "If you're stupid enough to ride a bicycle or drive a small car on the road with my 6000-pound 500-HP monster, then you deserve to get run over."

Call me a communist, but personal safety should not be an excuse for endangering others.

It seems to be this car is a perfect start for the kind of new world we must seek.

Many studies by independent technical energy researchers and public policy makers and energy policy makers/planners validate the concept. The findings, released and approved by gov't, indepedent researchers and industry concluded that: majority (approv 80%) of commutes are less than 100 mi round trip for work and metro living and the energy poliicy goal was an electric car that could do a 120mi round trip.

Re safety and speed. It is clear from safety studies that 20mi, 25 mi, 30 mi, 35mi limits, depending on particular city street, throughfare condiditons, are the safest for all of us in the city. I regularly violate these with my driving ... but shouldn't. I often reflect on how close I came to causing harm or being harmed by excess speed in the city. Generally, it is well established that aware safe driving skills are the best way to avoid harm ... speed, distance between cars, care at intersections and deferring to others havimg right of way are the most important and do, can, avoid more harm than mass and armor.

So, it seems to me that a 35mi/hr, 120mi range electric car is a great start.

I do think, and research supports, that we need a grade-up from the maya 300 class car -- highway speed and better safety -- for highway driving, not because of city street driving. None of us needs to be going more than 30 or 35mi/hr in the city.

A way to overall safety also, I think, is to apply public policy to reduce the number, pervasiveness, of SUV's, pickups and the like as personal preference at the expense of the rest of us and our world. I don't think these vehicles carry the proportionate total life-cycle cost to the envrionment, harm they do to the rest of us. Personally, I think huge SUVs and Pickups and the like ought to carry an annual luxury tax (environment, safety abuse tax) where this tax gets applied as a tax credit for those of us who are purchasing world-care greener cars. And, I think public policy legislation should dictate an insurance rider paid into a public fund that would be used to pay for insurance for the uninsured to have insurance or to assist with safety development of new electric cars or as an insurance credit applied to electric cars.

Re battery technology. The technology applied is the path being pursued by those companies positioning themselves to succeed as providers of batteries for electic vehicles that will be mass-use feasible for the future. The leading global battery mfgr in the u.s. is pursueing the same technology path. Better economics will come ... let's tax the Gas and Size "hogs" on the road to provide purchase credits for we electric car pioneer purchasers.

Lastly, I love the look of the Maya 300!!


It amuses me the number of people who whine about "oh dear, on American Roads you'd get crushed by SUVs".

As if this stops cyclists and motorcyclists from using the roads with NO protection.

In addition, no matter what you drive, there's always something bigger than you that can kill you. Do you suggest that everyone drive 18 wheeler semis?
