Nissan To Begin E10 Testing in Japan
06 February 2008
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will begin bioethanol trials in Japan through its participation in the Tokachi E10 project for the testing of E10 fuel, which contains a 10% bioethanol mix. Early trials will be conducted in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, beginning 1 April.
Nissan is the first automaker in Japan to come forward with an E10 vehicle fully compliant with the safety, environment and technical guidelines issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The Murano E10 is officially recognized as Japan’s first Ministry-authorized E10 vehicle.
Within the scope of the Tokachi project, Nissan will support research related to the E10 engine’s combustion efficiency and exhaust emissions.
How long have vehicles been burning ethanol now? And what does the Ministry-authorization require? Devil's in details...

When you are small island nation like Japan, farm land is at a premium. If they could make ethanol using rice straw, they might produce all that they consume.
