Raser to Unveil Plug-in Series Hybrid Drive System for Full-Size SUVs and Pickups at SAE World Congress

Raser Technologies, Inc., in conjunction with its systems integration partner FEV, will unveil components of a new extended-range plug-in series hybrid electric vehicle powertrain and integrated drive system designed for full-size SUVs and pickup trucks at the SAE World Congress, 14-17 April, in Detroit, Michigan.

The extended-range plug-in series hybrid architecture integrates Raser’s Symetron technology in a 200 kW peak, 100 kW continuous AC induction motor and power electronic traction drive; and a 100 kW PM synchronous generating system with a 700V lithium-ion battery pack and power management system.

A full-size plug-in series hybrid SUV with this new powertrain is designed to drive 40 miles in all-electric mode under battery power, with near zero emissions. Fleet versions of this extended range electric vehicle are expected to offer up to 50 kW of exportable power from the onboard generator.

Symetron is an umbrella label for several Raser innovations in motors and controllers that increase power, torque and efficiency. The Symetron technology, which can be applied in a range of packages, AC or DC, can deliver the high torque of a permanent magnet motor without the use of permanent magnets—in essence, enabling the production of smaller, more powerful and less expensive motors.

Raser introduced a 100kW AC induction-based electric motor, the P-100, at EVS-22 in Japan in 2006. (Earlier post.)

In February, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) entered into an agreement with Raser Technologies, Inc. for the purchase and demonstration of two of the plug-in series hybrid electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs). (Earlier post.)

Design:

Would it be possible to design a very low drag (0.25), very light (less than 3000 lbs) but very large vehicle (W=80+, L=280+, H=60+) to satisfy those of us who have been convinced (not to say brain washed) that anything smaller is unsafe. Most of the interior space could be unusable as long as it looks BIG.

This big H-man toy could be a 100 mpg PHEV-40+ with enough room for more batteries and the diesel range extender genset. It could power the whole house during power failures or the construction trailor, workshop etc.

Cities could setup double parking places for those BIG toys (at double the price). Shopping centres would setup special double (2x long and 1.5x wide) parking places for them.

The hydraulic driver seat would be designed to accommodate drivers up to 7 feet and 450 lbs.

Could it be a plastic GM, Ford or a modified Dodge Ram?

I was just trying to pick "middle of the road" options to come to a price for a truck likely to be used as a main commuter vehicle (as opposed to a work vehicle). I put it together that way because I think new truck buyers are paying closer to $30,000 than $20,000.

The Union of Concerned Scientists designed an Explorer SUV that got a lot better mileage and preformed even better. It did not cost all that much more. This was illustrated many years ago.

It showed that if people want larger vehicles, they can be lighter, sleeker, more fuel efficient and not cost much more than existing designs.

It is a matter of national priorities. If we as a people wanted to do this we could. We have car makers that produce what they want and people that buy them. There is very little concern for what is good for the nation, only what is good for the corporation.

It is interesting to note some of the sentiment about gas guzzlers. The basic spin seems to be that it is their right (freedom) to buy the biggest most gas guzzling vehicles they want. They are paying for the gas, so that is their problem.

If we consume 10% more oil because those people bought gas guzzlers, we all pay for it. We pay in high prices due to increase demand. We pay in shortages because of excess use. We pay in "national interests" that have cost us and are still costing us a fortune. We pay for dirtier air, global warming and climate change and the problems those bring.

The list goes on, but the point is we all pay for gas guzzlers. It is not just a personal choice that has no relevance to anyone else. Until we see that, we will see very little else.

most of the people that I know that drive these gas guzzlers do it for the size.. they really dont care much about the cost of gas since they make a very good living.. when the family makes $160000 a year, $150 in gas every week is not too important.

One electric series SUV will do more to save the planet than 5 Priuses..

Ford GM and Toyota all make fuel efficent cars which they sell in the UK. The problem is not the car makers but the car buyers. I agree that some people need large vehicals occasionaly, these could be rented for the the odd weekend for less than the extra cost of running one all the time.

In London it is proposed that SUVs, pick ups, large salon cars pay £25 per day to go in the central area, while Prius's and other low emmisions cars can go in for nothing. I would expect that this causes a few people to think about their next car.

By the way the Prius is an excelent commuter car especialy during the final few miles when stopping and starting in the areas where there is congestion on the roads.

The suv is no different then the big screen tv. I f you take it out you either replace it with something just as good money wise or go bleep off. AND remember a ton of people drive for pleasure and thier money is what realy funds the entire thing.

And fuess what... cars are getting bigger in europe and asia because shock of shocks big cars are growing even in much higher fuel price regions;

You have a legit gripe about toy trucks. And if you look at those "toys" in parking lots, a recent study shows 95% or those beds are empty - 95% of the time. Talk about wasted space.

Hence my comment about pickups for commercial use. They have a new special on National Geographic called Human Footprint. One of the ads talked about each person consuming 10,000 bottles of beer and more than 4000 pounds of chicken in a lifetime. That is statistical, but it shows part of what a consumer society consumes.

Seriously. I think that Hybrid SUVs are bad for the environment because alot of people look at them and say "their fuel economy is almost as good as a slightly smaller vehicle. Is it worth it, to give up my full sized truck for something that uses slightly less gas and lowers my status?"
Some people say that one hybrid SUV saves more fuel than ten Priuses, but they don't take into account how many people (with unneeded SUVs) would have decided to buy smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles if the hybrid SUVs weren't available

I was interested in Raser in the past. It appears to me that government/business sectors are working together(see quote on right by Sen. Hatch). Maybe not as fast as we like, but the improvements, drive, profit incentives are way up from past efforts.

The people involved at Raser are not slouches and have connections that are advantageous as market suppliers to GM, Ford, Toyota, etc.

Is there any reason their products cannot be finely tuned for cars in the future? As in "40 mile electric" GM products? One of their board members is past GM executive.

One thing every one needs to understand about electric vehicles is the batteries are a large liability when you get in a wreck during a rain storm or run in to deep water, think about pictures of cars stuck in flood water. The dead short from the water could kill.

If large 4 x 4 and pick-ups are really for business, their owners could easily pass the extra registration fees, gas tax, access fees etc to the customers. That's what is done with large long distance trucks in most countries.

So, let's start with a $1/lb yearly registration fee for all vehicles above 2500 or 3000 lbs.

If $1/lb is not enough, why not increase the fee progressively to $2/lb?

The $$ collected should go into a National Fund to subsidize the purchase of hybrids, PHEVs and BEVs (even larger SUV/Pick-up PHEVs and BEVs could qualify for the subsidy)

The raser motor technolgy can be used to reduce the operating costs of many uses of the motor. It has also the chance of reducing the cost of a motor and drive electronics for electric vehicles.

A table put out by TH!NK shows that a ZEBRA battery has about the same energy per pound as L-Ion batteries. They have been in limited production for about ten years and tested in many vehicles. GM did not dare put one into the EV-1 and certainly not two or they would have had a LA to LV electric car.

In any case, no manufacturer should be allowed to sell an electric car in the US. Each electric drive car should have an AUXILLARY POWER UNIT at least the size of a large model airplane engine in order to give it the possibility of filling up at service stations for infinite range like most other cars.

The range of ordinary cars is not mentioned; why should the range of electric drive cars be mentioned. All the talk about range was used by GM to kill its car when they knew they could make a 200 mile one if a chief executive wanted one in two weeks....HG...
