Brazil’s 1.5 Million NGV Fleet to Grow 10% in 2008
09 June 2008
ANBA. Brazil’s fleet of 1.5 million natural gas vehicles (NGV) should grow 10% this year, according to the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (IBP). Brazil’s NGV fleet expanded by 14% last year.
According to data for April this year, the southeastern Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro hosts the majority (655,540 vehicles) of the country’s CNG-powered vehicle fleet, which totals 1,541 million. Second is the state of São Paulo (SE), with 377,416 vehicles.
NGVs represent about 10% of the total Brazilian fleet, according to the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles (IANGV). In June 2007, Brazil’s NGV fleet was the third-largest in the world, behind Argentina and Pakistan.
The IBP stated that the reduction in the NGV market growth expectation this year is a consequence of the power supply crisis that took place in late 2007, when the country had to resort to gas-fired thermoelectric power in order to avoid a power shortage, in the face of low water volumes at reservoirs. That led the market to retract.
Petrobras is going to provide more natural gas from the Campos Basin (Rio), and is also importing 28 million cubic meters/day of gas from Bolivia.
So, will this push Petrobas into exploring Brazil's coasts for Methane Clathrate deposits?

I don't think you'll find a lot of Methane Hydrate
there. It seems to be parked near the Arctic and
Antarctic regions.
A better bet would be to stop Mars exploration
and have NASA do something more practical: placing
Solar collectors in Earth orbit or on the Moon.
Time's running out on finite Earth-mined energy.
We have to do it eventually, anyway. Get started
NOW.

By the way, my solar blab was a bit off-topic,
so I would like to comment on this story. Brazil,
Argentina & Pakistan have each upwards of 1.5 NGVs.
The United States has a paltry 150,000. Why
do we have only ONE option in the United States?
When I choose something, I want a real choice.
How come behind door #1 we have OIL. Behind door
#2 we have OIL. and behind door #3 we have (surprise)
OIL again, when in these smaller economies the
people have #1 OIL, #2 Ethanol #3 CNG #4 Methanol
for fuels while all we have is OIL?.
I'm spamming my Representatives, and you should too.
If that doesn't work, we hit the streets with signs,
placards and banners. Time to march on Washington
and get some real answers and some real choices.
I'm fed up. I was already ENRON'd a few years ago,
and I didn't like getting raped one bit.
