Con Edison Shifts to B20, Acquiring Hybrids and Working on PHEVs and EVs
24 June 2008
The utility Con Edison has shifted its fleet of approximately 1,700 diesel trucks to B20 biodiesel (20% biodiesel). In addition, Con Edison plans to replace 50 of the smaller vehicles it in fleet with hybrid vehicles in 2008.
The company, a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. and the provider of electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York, says it is also working in tandem with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the automotive industry on the development of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).
The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will have the capacity to run on electricity for longer periods, only resorting to petroleum after 60 to 80 miles of travel. They also can be charged from standard electrical outlets.
Through the company’s Research and Development department, Con Edison will continue to explore the possibilities for all-electric vehicles (EV). Most recently, the company began a pilot program with two all-electric field vehicles for inspecting work sites, a program which could result in more widespread use.
Curious to know just who manufactures a 60-80 mile all electric PHEV in 2008? The use of B20 in the fleet is a positive step.

I love it that people finally see the value of fuel effecient cars. When are we going to do that with our trains, or put in monorail type systems to move frieght, instead of trucks. They would be overhead. And moving on a cusion of air. Green is best mother earth will thank you many times over, she may decied that you are worth saving.Because our earth that is alive could shut us all down and reclaim the earth. It could be another million years before we are allowed to come back. Green buildings free energy is better than hurting our children who are our future.

HOW MANY COMPANIES ARE GOING TO FIELD TEST VEHICLES? IT IS TIME WE START PRODUCING CARS FOR ACTUAL SALE TO CUSTOMERS, WE DO NOT HAVE TIMES WITH CURRENT LEVELS OF POLLUTION AND HIGH OIL PRICES. GOVERNMENTS SHOULD FORCE AUTO COMPANIES TO START PRODUCTION OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IF THEY ARE 100% SAFE, TECHNICALLY WE CAN KEEP ON IMPROVING THEM AS TIME GOES ON. THERE IS A SAYING IN GUJARAT, INDIA THAT A WALKING HORSE CAN GO MILES SO WE SHOULD START PRODUCING ELECTRIC 2,3 AND 4 WHEELERS RIGHT NOW.
