Pennsylvania DoT Orders 10 Azure Dynamics Hybrid Buses
23 June 2008
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has ordered 10 series hybrid buses with an option for 15 additional more at a later date from Azure Dynamics. (Earlier post.)
PennDOT has ordered the 18-passenger Azure/StarTrans Hybrid Para-transit Citibus for delivery in 2008.
The Azure Series-Hybrid CitiBus system uses a GM Vortec 4.8L engine and offers a more than 40% improvement in fuel economy, and a 30% reduction in carbon emissions in city conditions. The powertrain also offers a 25% reduction in engine maintenance and a 75% reduction in brake maintenance versus conventionally equipped competitors.
Future designs will keep in mind that ice engine variants with improvements in fuel economies be readily accommodated. Eventually being replaced by battery power sources is likely in the useful anticipated vehicle life 20 years?
Meanwhile 70% reduction in brake wear, engine servicing requirements down 25% 40% fuel savings, with 30% less emissions are not to be sneezed at.
I'll bet that passenger comfort goes up by similar amount through smoother operation and elimination of gear changing surges.

Besides the better fuel economy, these hybrid buses are so much quieter than the older diesel models they are replacing here in San Francisco.
