Iveco Delivers Diesel-Electric Hybrid Medium-Duty Truck to Coca-Cola Enterprises for 4 Month Test

Iveco has delivered a Eurocargo diesel-electric parallel hybrid medium-duty urban distribution vehicle to Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) at the European Business Summit in Brussels.

The hybrid uses a 16-valve, 4-cylinder 160 hp (119 kW) tector Euro 5 diesel engine in combination with a 45 kW electric motor-generator, a six-speed automated gearbox and a lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 1.9 kWh. Fuel savings are estimated to be up to 30% compared to comparable conventional diesel-engined vehicles.

The vehicle is able to start from a standstill in electric mode only, with the diesel engine starting automatically to meet the driver’s performance requirement. It also features a stop & start function and regenerative braking, with a payload only 200 kg less than conventional diesel engined models. A further innovation in this vehicle is the automatic engagement of the engine brake during deceleration, in advance of the application of the foundation brake.

CCE will use the vehicle to deliver Coca-Cola products in Brussels until the end of July to test the feasibility of this hybrid technology for commercial trucks. The hybrid truck will follow a specific delivery route which is approximately 20 km long and serves different customers in the busy center of Brussels.

This is a big step for our commitment to energy conservation and climate change. Coca-Cola Enterprises began deploying the largest hybrid delivery fleet in North America last year (www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqf_6v_dbb0), and we're very excited about piloting the technology in our European territories.

With a very small battery only needing 1.9Kwh storage capacity this sounds very inexpensive.
Has anyone any idea how they have managed to get a good storage rate for regenerative battery without using supercapacitors?
