Mitsubishi Fuso To Share Components with Daimler; New Model of Canter Eco Hybrid Coming by 2011

Nikkei. Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corp. will share components with group firms of parent Daimler AG in an attempt to reduce costs. Under this new arrangement, the Nikkei reports, Mitsubishi Fuso will introduce a new model of the Canter Eco Hybrid (earlier post) by 2010 or 2011.

The new truck will reduce fuel consumption by using a combination of a diesel engine and electric motor. The model is expected to be about 20% more fuel-efficient than an ordinary diesel truck. Mitsubishi Fuso aims to equip the truck with improved technology for charging the battery via braking.

...A Mitsubishi Fuso executive said the firm aims to lower the price to a level at which the hybrid version proves cheaper than a standard vehicle when used for several years.

The company also plans to begin developing a next-generation electric bus jointly with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. with the aim of creating a concept model in two years.
