Scuderi Releases Video Footage of Running Split-Cycle 1L Prototype

Scuderi Group, LLC has released the first video footage (with sound) of its split-cycle Scuderi Engine prototype running, on its own, in the laboratory test cell. The two-minute video, the first to show the naturally-aspirated one-liter gasoline prototype engine in operation, provides a view of the engine as it undergoes testing, proving the concept of Firing After Top Dead Center.

In September at the Frankfurt show, the Scuderi Group announced that it had proven the concept of Firing After Top Dead Center and that the naturally aspirated, 1-liter prototype was running. Preliminary test results have matched earlier computer simulation projections. (Earlier post.)

Split-cycle engines separate the four strokes of intake, compression, power, and exhaust into two separate but paired cylinders. The first cylinder is used for intake and compression. The compressed air is then transferred through a crossover passage from the compression cylinder into the second cylinder, where combustion and exhaust occur. A split-cycle engine is essentially an air compressor on one side with a combustion chamber on the other.

The Scuderi engine is expected to produce up to 80% fewer toxins than a typical internal combustion engine. The current naturally aspirated gasoline prototype is expected to reach efficiency gains of 5-10% more than any conventional engine on the road today. When fully developed with its turbocharged and Air-Hybrid components, the engine is expected to achieve efficiency levels of 25-50% higher.

If this prototype runs equally or better than the predicted computer simulation results from SW research, Do you think the OEM's will want to develope it further for their future automobiles???

I am very pleased to actually hear of a model running, since I doubted if it ever would, and I wanted to see such a thing.

I had invented but did not patent a two piston cycle engine with a crossover valve, but it did not do combustion in the pistons. It was intended to be a piston replacement of the turbine cycle for ease of combustion of any and all fuels. More interested and experienced people had developed Brayton cycle engines already.

The scuderi is also a stepwise version of the turbine engine as were some others before it.

The split cycle is interesting but the air hybrid is more interesting in the automotive industry. It is curious that two large air hybrid engines already exit and with a cross over valve.

Compressed air energy storage (CAES)

AEC's CAES plant was declared commercial in McIntosh, Alabama on May 31, 1991. Second commercially owned in the world.

World's first CAES plant is a 290 MW facility located in Huntdorf, Germany.

An uninterruptible power company uses compressed air tanks too.

Just changing the use to automobiles may not be sufficient novelty.

Scuderi did happen wait until there is little money available from automotive companies.

Perhaps a chinese company will be interested. There is a lot of pollution to run the engine on perhaps. ..HG..


If Scuderi does NOT claim this prototype runs equally or better than their predicted computer simulation, I will be surprised, and the OEM's will ignore the claim or one could build a copy of their own overnight (like they don’t already know WAY more about ICEs than Scuderi’s heirs).

Did you realize that it is perfectly legal for ANYONE to build their own copy?

The question you should ask is:

If this prototype runs (or shows that it can eventually run) better than existing ICEs, do you think the OEM's will want to develop it further for their future automobiles??? “

The answer is, since it takes only ONE auto maker to decide he will produce this "remarkable" engine and leap ahead of all others and capture the entire car market overnight, almost ALL would want to develop it further.

In fact they would have already built many versions of this for evaluation - if there was any way it might be a breakthrough.

If they and we do not know the secret to make this engine - then neither TT, Roger or pfb has any reason to believe it will work.

If it has the promise of only being equal to existing ICEs, some OEMs might pursue it.

Big automakers have major decisions made by CEO's, many of whom do not have intimate details of the nitty gritty inner working of an engine, hence must rely on senior R&D engineers for advise. These Sr. engineers are human beings, hence they have ego problems to overcome. Ideas that they do not come up with, they will try to shoot down as much as possible...even if an engine prototype developed by outsider can be shown to be superior to existing ICE technology, they will try to say that: Oh, it won't be reliable...Too expensive to make...or that their own engine R&D program will soon come up with something just as good but more practical and developed in-house...etc...Toyota has a policy to categorically refuse to accept any ideas nor development that does not come from their own R&D facility.

It may be a long and uphill struggle for a small R&D firm trying to sell even developed product to a big OEM. Smaller OEM's are often founded and run by engineers and may be more open to form partnership with small R&D firms in order to compete with the big boys.

You obviously have heard of the Zajac engine, since I found you commenting on it. How is your engine concept differ from it? See the following again:

80% cleaner emmissions, better torque, higher effeciency sounds pretty good to me.

Whether we will see this engine in a car someday will depend on how successful the Scuderi Group will be at promoting/marketing this engine concept/prototype. Also will depend on the true merits of other competing technologies at the time and how well they will market their concepts. Henry Gibson says that he also come up with a split-cycle engine design, so does Zajac group...and some others, like the Star Rotor design, claiming 60% efficiency.

Marketing will be just as important as the true merit of a design or concept.


Marketing will sell pet rocks, Barbie dolls, Hannah Montana songs and popularize the macarena but it won't sell a new ICE to buyers and hard nosed auto makers.
Not even maybe.
