European Clean Sky JTI Issues Second Call for Proposals; €8.4M for 24 Topics

The EU’s Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) (earlier post) has launched its second call for proposals (SP1-JTI-CS-2009-02). The €8.4-million (US$12.5-million) call covers a total of 24 topics. Depending on the nature of the participant, the funding will be between 50% and 75% of the Topic maximum budget indicated.

The two topics with the largest amount of maximum funding in this call for cleaner aviation technology are (1) the modelling, simulation and rig prototype development of an electric tail drive for rotorcraft (maximum funding of €1.875M) and the design and manufacture of an aircraft tractor compliant with specifications for Smart Operations on ground (max. funding €1.5 million).

The Clean Sky JTI is a major public/private partnership to develop technology by 2015 that can reduce aviation CO2 emissions by 40%; NOx emissions by 60%; and noise by 50%. The Clean Sky JTI will be one of Europe’s biggest ever research projects, with €1.6 billion (US$2.4 billion) to be invested up to 2014. The Clean Sky initiative will run until 31 December 2017.

The Clean Sky JTI is arranged around the six following Integrated Technology Demonstrators (ITDs):

  • Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft,
  • Green Regional Aircraft,
  • Green Rotorcraft,
  • Systems for Green Operation,
  • Sustainable and Green Engines,
  • Eco-Design.

The JTI launched its first, €25-million call in June. (Earlier post.) No topics from the Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft ITD are included in this second call. Topics in the second call include:
