The Tazzari Group gave the ZERO electric vehicle its debut at the Bologna Motor Show (4-8 December). The city EV will go onsale in January 2010, via an international distribution network already present in all major European countries and the US and to be defined in other countries worldwide.
The ZERO features a 150 N·m rear-wheel drive 3-phase asynchronous motor, powered by a lithium-iron phosphate battery pack. Tazzari estimates average electricity consumption of 0.135 kW/h per km. The estimated range in Economy drive—one of four drive modes—is 140 km (87 miles). Acceleration from 0-50 km/h (0-31 mph) takes less than 5 seconds; top speed is 90 km/h (56 mph).
Using a standard 220V charger, the pack recharges in 9 hours; an optional 220V Multifast charger offers 3 charging speeds, and will replenish the pack in 5, 9 or 14 hours. An optional 380V Superfast charger will recharge the pack to 80% in 50 minutes with a 3-phase power supply.
The ZERO offers four driving modes:
- Race, for maximum power.
- Economy, making optimal use of the charge for the up to 140 km range.
- Standard, a balance between performance and range.
- Rain, for adverse road conditions.
The Tazzari Group comprises several companies, operating primarily in two sectors: engineering and aluminum casting. The ZERO chassis is a combination of structural castings and aluminium profiles, and is made in the foundries of the Tazzari Group. The two-door sedan weights 400 kg (882 lbs) without batteries; adding the pack boosts the weight to 542 kg (1,195 lbs). The ZERO offers two luggage areas with a combined 180 liter capacity (6.4 cubic feet).
(A hat-tip to Bob!)
It's good to have another EV choice next month.

Within 10 years the world may have 100+ city EVs and as many extended range highway versions. Consolidation will take place after 2020
The e-Nano from Tata may be around soon followed by the PHEV-Nano.

After they picked that name (and that look) - there's nowhere to go but up.

The U.S. may want a small car that looks a bit more like a sedan or small SUV. Status is a big part of the car purchase. Prius said something about the owner, but what does a micro car say? Marketing is a big part of the adoption of products and you have to have wide spread adoption of efficient vehicles to reduce oil imports.
