MBtech Highlighting New 4-Cylinder, 6-Liter Natural Gas Engine at Vienna Engine Symposium

At the 31st Vienna Engine Symposium this week, MBtech will showcase an innovation project consisting of a 4-cylinder, 6-liter natural gas combustion engine for medium-duty commercial vehicles.

The engine is being developed to be considerably more compact and lighter than current 6-cylinder medium-duty engines while also offering significant advantages with regard to mechanical friction loss. MBtech’s engineers have set the goal of achieving at least the same power and torque ratings despite running on CNG and having two cylinders less.

The 4-cylinder engine uses a stoichiometric air fuel ratio (Lambda = 1) and a modular design that enables hybridization. The design as an SI engine enables it to utilize lightweight materials for the crankcase and cylinder head.

The combination of the innovative lightweight design and operating concept of the four-cylinder engine will enable goods to be transported commercially in a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective fashion in future, MBtech says.



Will some Gearhead correct me, but isn't there a huge vibration problem with a 4cyl this size?

I'm guessing it must use a balance shaft. There's a good reason (mechanical balance) most large truck engines are straight sixes.


There will likely be a balance shaft and some remaining unpleasant vibration under some conditions anyway. Isuzu makes a 5.2 liter four cylinder diesel for its tilt-cab trucks. I rented one such truck recently and found the level of vibration acceptable for the application under most conditions, though shutdown could be quite rough.

Keep in mind that expectations for noise, vibration, and harshness are at a totally different level for commercial trucks than what is expected in passenger vehicles.
