New Polo GTI Lowers Fuel Consumption by 25%

Volkswagen has reintroduced a Polo GTI model. Equipped with a twincharged 1.4-liter TSI engine (turbo and supercharging) and a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG), the 132 kW (177 hp) Polo GTI offers combined fuel consumption of 5.9 L/100 km (40 mpg US). That is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 139 g/km.

As a comparison, its direct predecessor equipped with an equivalent power 1.8-liter turbo engine consumed 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers (30 mpg US), equivalent to 188 g/km CO2; the new car reduces fuel consumption by 25%.

The 1,194 kilogram GTI accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 229 km/h (142 mph).

Power is transferred to the front wheels via DSG as standard equipment. An electronic transverse differential lock (XDS) reduces the tendency to understeer and improves handling especially in quick driving through curves. Like all versions of the model series, the Polo GTI also comes equipped with the standard ESP electronic stabilization program including Hill Climb Assist.

Not bad at all for a sporty performance high speed car. Performance does not have to mean lower fuel economy?

Probably 35 mpg combined EPA, but that's still not bad, puts it into Cruze/etc territory.

The combined 40mpg US (48 mpg UK) takes into account urban as well as highway mileage, which is also how CO2 is calculated (which is also directly related to mpg)

The older equivalent 1.8T is the same engine I have in my passat, which has a combined milage of 28mpg US (34mpg UK) in the Passat, generating 198gm/km CO2 - slighly less than the Polo with the 1.8T. However, I can regularly get over 40 mpg UK with highway mileage and raise my average to 38 mpg UK. You should be able to do the same with the Polo if its is geared to lower revs at speed. I imaging this is the case with a 7-speed gearbox, so perhaps 55-60 mpg UK is possible at highway speeds.

Scott, the EPA's profiles are currently a lot more heavy-footed than the EU's, so it's not just the imperial/US gallon conversion. Was this vehicle tested to EPA standards to arrive at the 40mpg US, or simply converted gallons?
