The new gearbox is coupled with a front transversal electric motor of 70 kW in the e-Vito and is developed with two-stage reduction with a total reduction ratio of 1:8.29. The gearbox ratio was developed to permit a maxim vehicle speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) at a maximum motor speed of 8,000 rpm.
Oerlikon Graziano is best known for its six-speed transaxles, which are standard fitment in models from performance cars such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo. The most recently announced new cars to feature its transaxles are the Audi R8, the Alfa Romeo 8C, and the Aston Martin DBS. The company also produces Four Wheel Drive/performance Rear Wheel Drive cars sub-assemblies.
However, it has also been active over the last 20 years in the Electric Drivelines Assemblies Product Line, ranging from the very first golf/utility transaxle to the latest transfer case developed for the light commercial electric vehicle, and including the latest applications of the battery electric city cars.
Vocis Driveline Controls contributes its control software and electronic hardware design skills, while Oerlikon Graziano contributes its transmission design and manufacturing expertise.
Oerlikon Graziano and Vocis had the opportunity to develop the e-Vito transmission via their participation into the consortium funded by Advanced West Midlands and led by Zytek Automotive, aimed at converting an internal combustion (diesel engine) Mercedes Vito van into a full electric taxi demonstrator.
Through the project, Oerlikon Graziano says, it has strengthened its position as a supplier of electric vehicle transmissions with a wide product range from 90 N·m to 350 N·m single-speed units.
