Renault and Nissan Make a Bid For Ssangyong
08 June 2010
Nikkei. Renault, in conjunction with alliance partner Nissan, has submitted a letter of intent to acquire South Korean auto maker Ssangyong Motor Co.
A Renault spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires that its bid is one of six that have been short-listed by Ssangyong. Ssangyong last week selected six bidders to conduct due diligence so they can decide whether to submit binding bids next month. The company has been under court-led bankruptcy protection since early 2009 after suffering severe cash-flow problems.
...A senior Nissan official said recently that the main interest of Ssangyong is that it has industrial capacity that could be used by Renault and its partners to feed the strong demand in South Korea and other fast-growing markets in southeast Asia. Renault Samsung Motors is 80% owned by Renault.
Ssangyong Motor is South Korea’s fourth-largest car maker.
