Microwave Technology Company Develops Production Process for Lithium-ion Cathode Materials
30 August 2010
Spheric Technologies, a Phoenix, Arizona, high temperature microwave technology company, has developed what it says is a production process for lithium iron phosphate cathode material for Li-ion batteries.
The Spheric process uses unique precursors and applies microwave in the drying and synthesis stages, yielding a phase pure product requiring little, if any, refinement, thereby eliminating costly refining required by other processes, according to the company.
Microwave reduces production time from more than 10 hours (with conventional systems) to 30 minutes, producing savings in energy consumption, equipment utilization and cost.
Spheric Technologies has filed two patent applications covering microwave techniques, material and technology for the synthesis of lithium ion battery materials.
Spheric says that its AMPS microwave furnace is ideally configured for the production of LFP, among other applications. Spheric will market the furnace with a license for the patent-pending lithium battery material production technology.
Keep those advances coming guys. They all add up to reduce cost in every little way.

I thought that patents on micro-wave ovens ran out decades ago.

These patents are probably material and process related but not to actual microwave furnace technology.

"has filed two patent applications"
I hope the license fees are reasonable. The nation can use every advance it can get and not whatever the market will pay.
