Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and the Renault-Nissan Alliance Partner on EV Adoption
14 October 2010
The Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and the Renault-Nissan Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing a partnership to promote and implement electric vehicles in Ankara, Turkey, following the example of several other capital cities.
The partnership program will cover the deployment in the Ankara municipality of a charging network for electric vehicles which will be launched in 2011, the rollout of corresponding services and developments, and the purchase of 100 electric vehicles for the fleet of the municipality’s services.
The two are setting up a working group to obtain practical results on implementing an infrastructure for electric vehicle use in the city by 2011. The working group will be tasked with making proposals on:
- multiplying the number of projects that could favor the use of electric vehicles in Ankara, especially those focused on charging networks;
- installing and developing a network of charging stations for electric vehicles;
- developing special projects for fleets, public spaces and cities; and
- analyzing the regulations on installing and operating electric vehicle charging stations.
Renault has a very strong position in Turkey in terms of both production and sales. Last October, Renault announced it would be producing Fluence Z.E., one of its new electric vehicles, at the Bursa plant. Fluence Z.E. will be the first mass-produced electric vehicle in Turkey.
With the next Renault Fluence EV built in Turkey, this MoU makes sense to get the local authorities and people involved and use locally produced EVs.

Turkey is the near prefect place for EV's. The fuel prices there are slightly more expensive than Europe, but it's electric rates are like 1/2 to 1/3 of Europe.
